SA need 41 off 3.
Odds now favour NED
Klassen now. Will take a miracle now.
3 runs per ball to win. This would take one of the worlds best to steer them home from here. And SA only have the tail.
Despite giving SA the barest sniff with a wide and noball plus free hit NED are home.
So we know England v India in 1 semi, and the winner of this next game v NZ in the other.
Assuming no weather issues.
ETA: Sorry, this is wrong. India can lose 1st place still.
The best way to fix that is to get them to win. And the best way for that, is to get them to play more. ICC are you listening
Well that was a very satisfying night of cricket!
Was an interesting group stage, down to the wire in both groups. Pakistan got through ahead of South Africa after a shock win by Netherlands - SA may have got unlucky with the No Result against Zimbabwe, but the extra point would still have seen them behind Pakistan on NRR.
India vs England and Pakistan vs New Zealand. I think the obvious final is India vs New Zealand.
I agree, but just barely. Since these are T20’s, I think each team probably has between a 20 -30% chance to win the cup. So basically all toss-ups. But this version of the T20 World Cup is much better than the one last year, in which there was a clear advantage to winning the toss and then chasing.
Right now at Ladbrokes (implied percentages are mine)
India 2/1 (30.5%)
England 5/2 (26.2%)
New Zealand 3/1 (22.9%)
Pakistan 7/2 (20.4%)
Hope I’ve got my sums right, but it seems the punters agree with you.
They clearly think the winner of India vs England will go on to win the cup. I’m supporting England, obviously, but if not I’d rather it went to NZ - they’ve suffered enough
Correct. The implied conditional probability for England or India winning the final assuming they get there is 57%.
Putting that into perspective the chances of South Africa beating Netherlands was 91.4%, which I thought was a ridiculously high number for T20.
Except for the “clearly” part.
Well, they just won the inaugural “Test World Cup”.
If Pakistan fail to win the World Cup with this bowling attack, it will be a travesty.
If Pakistan do win the World Cup with this batting line up, it will be a travesty.
I can’t help but remember the Pak v NZL 1992 semifinal.
That damn game scarred me for life.
ha! nice one.
I think as always we get to the last 4 with really not too much of an idea who will win it. it is a bit of a lottery, but an entertaining one. I’ve enjoyed it no matter who goes on to win.
Of course I’d like England to win but my money would be on India, certainly seeing as that semi-final is on a used pitch and we didn’t cover ourselves with glory against the spin of Sri Lanka. The other thing against England is the injury problem. I think with all our best players available we stood a much better chance but that isn’t likely to be the case.
My gut feel is an India v Pakistan final. That’ll be a noisy one!
My understanding is that Babar & Rizwan have contributed over 50% of PAK T20 runs in the year. This tournament it is just 20%. So the guys who couldn’t get a bat pre-WC are the guys who have dragged the team through. Babar has scored less runs than PAK have received in wides.
Like the French in a Rugby WC, PAK can be relied on to play at least one game when they are totally imperious. You just hope that’s somebody else’s misfortune.
And they must feel the wind at their backs at this point, as I’m sure they would have expected to be home by now. That’s dangerous for the other 3. My money’s on Pak over NZ tomorrow. India v Pak would be a real treat on early Sunday am. Won’t mind waking up at 3am for that one. If I sleep at all, since I’m also going to UFC at MSG the prior evening.
Excellent start for Pakistan. Halfway through the NZ innings and they are going at less than 6 an over, three top wickets down. Pakistan are sharp in the field and you can see some hesitancy in the NZ running.
Spin isn’t being hammered here but I reckon the tension is building. Predict NZ to cut loose very soon and lose wickets as a result.
