International cricket rolling thread

Back again a couple of levels below international cricket, last weekend was the first weekend for finals in 2020/21.
The added variable is Sydney’s weather is always fickle around this time.

Finals set-up is that the top 6 teams in each grade progress with ladder position based on points won and any tie split by “quotient” which is batting average/bowling average.

1v6, 2v5 & 3v4 with higher ranked team needing to be beaten and the highest ranked loser getting a second chance for the semi finals. Games are played on Sat&Sun with 96 overs per day.

Widespread rain through the week meant wickets were often underprepared and then there was heavy rain on the city east on Friday. Any ground with decent covers got a full or near full game on Saturday with the forecast prospect of Sunday being rained out.

So for the top teams the aim is to survive the day and the toss can be definitive.
A situation ideal for the gods of cricket to be their capricious worst.

In 1st grade (our #2 v 5) they won the toss and batted. Reasonable deck under circumstances, slow outfield. They made a solid start. Were 0-50 odd then collapsed to 8-96 and recovered to be all out 160, about 100 shy of par.
We had 39 overs to bat and getting to stumps was the primary aim and were OK at 3-81.

Sunday was a day of intrigue rather than play. Overnight rain made the outfield sodden. The pitch was well covered and always going to be playable. A fine Scottish mist thru the morning wrecked any prospect of play in the morning session between 10:30am and lunch. After lunch the mist stopped, there was no sun all day but a helpful wind and the opposition asked to borrow our Club’s SuperSoppers. They worked like Trojans for the next three hours removing water from the surrounds, run-ups and off the covers. Did a real good job too. We, of course did nothing to assist them.

There were intermittent showers and any opposition players who weren’t delegated to pushing the barrows were outside kicking a ball in short sleeves and bare feet to show the umpires that it was fine and that a start of play might be imminent. Anytime one of us ventured from the clubhouse onto the field we were under firm instructions from the captain have an unfurled umbrella, be wearing a hoodie and boots for exactly the opposite impression. :upside_down_face:

We eventually got just 6 overs in before the weather intervened and they conceded.

Our 2nds were playing a just couple of kms away and were in equivalent circumstances (us #2v5) but after dismissing the opposition for a gettable 169 had an unfathomable batting collapse and spend the last hour of Sat trying to get through to stumps and maybe saved by rain. But they were bowled out for just 30. Even worse, the 1v6 game was a near replica and if the #1 team lost our 2s would be eliminated. The #1 team finished 8 down but despite waiting around all day on the Sunday, not another ball was bowled and so they progress as #1 and our 2s got out of gaol though they lose their ranking and are now the #4 team in the semis.

Looks like India might be regretting their selection for this match - OK, their batsmen have posted the highest target of the series so far, but Sundar has gone for 52 off his 4 overs. England in control of the chase at the moment, though (as always in T20) it’s far from over.

Not a huge fan of the current Talksport2 commentator - I can’t tell if he’s excitedly describing a chance/wicket or runs until he gets to the end of his sentence, which is not ideal for radio.

The problem with talking about T20 cricket is how badly out of date a comment can be so soon after posting it.

2-2 now, with a game left.

Watching this final T20 between India and England, it’s amazing to me that this pitch is the same as the prior 4 T20’s and 2 tests. I didn’t think there could be that much variability just a few feet apart. Anyway, India looks to be putting up an impressive target.

Indeed they did. Also, I agree with you about the pitch, although just a tiny nitpick - it’s the same square, but a different pitch/wicket (the latter 2 terms are interchangeable in this context). How the groundstaff have prepared it can make a lot of difference.

On to the ODIs - India once again seem to be in control, though Kohli has just holed out, so England can hope this might trigger a collapse. India 170/2 as I type.

Thanks, good to know. I have noticed that “wicket” is used in several contexts in cricket. I wonder what the first use was for.

Man, watching Krunal’s interview brought tears to my eyes this morning that I did not expect. Announcers said it was the fastest 50 of any ODI debut.

So, the collapse I asked for sort of happened, but then an excellent partnership for India has brought them to what looks like a competitive total. It’s the sort of total England have sometimes made look easy in the last few years - but can they do it against top quality bowling?

Well, they’re off to a rip roaring start!

They were, and have now suffered a similar collapse to India. They are going to need a similar sixth-wicket stand to India’s to get there now. They do seem to have balls to spare compared with where India were, after their much faster start, but do they have the maturity/experience/skill to do it? I have severe doubts.

In today’s “Surely they can’t throw this away?” content, we have England, who have been set 336 to win in the second ODI against India. Stokes and Bairstow have got England to 280 in 35 overs, only needing 50 in 15 overs, but now they’ve both got out and Malan and Buttler are in. Surely they can go along at 4 an over for the rest of the game?

Aaaaand Buttler has been bowled!

Having much the same thoughts. India again seem to be a bowler light though, so England appear to have steadied the ship. Or to put it another way, this time Bairstow has probably put on enough for them to limp over the line.

Stokes’ 99 of 50 has put us so far ahead of the chase that we don’t need to take risks. It’s not as exciting, but these 1s and 2s from Malan and Livingstone should see us home in plenty of time.

I think you posted that just as Livingstone hit back to back sixes .

Indeed!

England win by 6 wickets with 6 overs left, never really in doubt once Stokes got going.

Yup, sets things up nicely for a series decider on Sunday.

Stokes went from 50 to 99 in 11 balls :open_mouth:

Great series with no throwaway games in any of the 3 formats. Hopefully the finale will be a classic.

Gotta give England at least a 75% chance to chase this total down. Key Indian wickets stalled them pretty early. Will be interesting to see how aggressive they start.

14 wickets down in 65 overs. Doesn’t seem like a bad wicket to bat on but the stats say otherwise.
