Oxford to London isn’t a difficult trip. Just thought I’d better warn you… (And if some of these Famous Names are turning up, I will definitely make the effort.)

I’m totally up for this, but there’s no way I’d be able to come unless it’s either the week before or the week after the U.S. Labor Day holiday (which is Monday, September 2nd next year). I don’t get to take vacation whenever I want, and my boss always closes the office for a week at the end of Summer, so that’s when I have to take my holiday. Besides, for those who can’t take time off of work, doing it over an official holiday would mean that at least a few people might be able to make it for a long weekend, since businesses are closed on that Monday anyway. Just a thought.

So put me on the “maybe” list.

Dammit, Alex, I said it was TOO FAR.

Have you ANY IDEA how long the train takes from Dorking to Victoria? Almost FORTYFIVE MINUTES! You think you bozos are worth that?

What? Dopers? Not a work do? Oh.

Oh fine - yeah. Just don’t make it Christmas day or anything - my mum’d kill me.

You couldn’t use Ann Widdicombe as your projectile, could you ?
One ward of warning, if it’s to be June-ish remember the not insignificant sporting occasion taking place yonder East although, if it is breakfast and lunchtime kick off’s, I don’t know why I’m mentioning it. I’m not excited or anything…

Anyhoo, I’m up for a drinkies – I’ll be the one wearing the Harry Potter t-shirt.

I can probalby make it down to London for then, not sure what my work situation will be, but I don’t see why not.

So yeah count me in.

kabbes, you live in Dorking?

No shit, I lived in Capel-near-Dorking for a summer.

Well, aren’t you a charmer.

Okay. I’ll say yes. But I’ve got a lot of convincing to do. I’d better get started RFN.

Woah - I very nearly moved to Capel. We lost a house there (and yes I did check my back pocket). In fact my adventures were chronicled in a pit thread: Mrs Kierney - beats there no heart in thy wizened breast?

Anyway, we’re much happier in Dorking. Even if it does sound like a present participle.

IIRC L_C used to live in these parts too. Who’d have known such a quiet area of the world would play host to such a mighty triumverate of world-bestriding colossuses?

And you know ancient languages and stuff - should that last word be colossi?

pan

christ, that only gives me 6 months for me to read up and give Alex B the philosophical thrashing of his lifetime…

The house I lived in was called Four Elms. Right next to a rather large estate whose owners kept their own stable.

It was a truly idyllic summer. Except for the fact that these wealthy, horse-owning neighbors had a downright fucking gorgeous daughter who was pretty much exactly my age. I will forever curse my timidity. She was so nice, too.

Would that I could be 16 again.

The loss of house story sucks raw, my friend. The people I stayed with in Capel had been through pretty much the same thing, though they managed to find another cottage nearby in a pinch.

And I also had no idea that L_C was a Surrey man. What are the odds.

The original word is Greek, so the proper plural would be colossoi. Since it is usually rendered in Latin, colossi is quite correct.

MR

Another Surrey man here (well, ex-Surrey). Several years outside Leatherhead and Guildford, and my parents still live in Surrey and Hampshire.

I’m planning to go to England next year just for fun and I would love to make the trip coincide with a DopeFest. Like MAEGLIN, I was planning to go in the spring but would be willing to push it back to the summer.

What would be of greatest help to me would be to set a date with as much notice as possible. I often have to schedule things six months to a year out, but I can schedule around a vacation if I know when it is. It’s far harder to reschedule work stuff to take vacation.

I am a very, very definite maybe. I’ll be there if you give me the dates and I don’t have a conflict. At this point, I have none for the month of July 2002.

Keep me posted!

Oh Yes! Down the A27 from Dorking, take the small left turn into Capel before winding your way through the country lane to the delightful haven of Rusper, noted for the equally pleasant Plough (mind your head).

Three miles on from there and you arrive in the once sleepy market town of Horsham (going past my old house on the way), birthplace of Percy Bysshe Shelly and my good self.

BTW Maeglin, I think I knew that girl a year or so later – banged like a good 'un
Some interesting names cropping up here, could be great fun!

Jesus, I’ve been to Guildford. And Worthing, too. I think one of the most relaxing days in my entire life was spent on the beach at Worthing.

You, sir, are a bastard. If there are statutory rape laws in England, I shall be sure to track her down and throw the book at you.

I’ve never been to Rusper, but the Capel pub was really quite nice. Called the Crown, or some such. Every time I went in, though, conversation rather stopped. Great village, but I wasn’t exactly accepted.

I was hoping I could travel to the UK in the offseason, as I am afraid that my ultimate destination, Devon, will be overrun by tourists in July. But for a gathering like this, it would surely be worth it.

I intend to, but it will take convincing. If it works out, our trip will most likely be full-blown London vacation (we’ve never been before) that happens to include this fest.

I’m interested and can easily arrange my London accomodation.
But my School’s holidays don’t start till July. Hopefully that will fit in with the general plan.

My mate used to live in Dorking*

*no more to say on that - just wanted to keep the theme going…

Hmm definately maybe if i can get some time off but then i do live pretty close
