Internet Explorer 6 and cookies: HELP!

The computer was in the shop, where they installed a new IDE controller and power supply, then re-installed Win98SE.

When I got home, one of the things I did was update to IE 6.0 SP1. I had it working just fine before all of this happened.

My security (now “privacy”) settings are all set to low or “accept all cookies,” and after doing that, I deleted the existing cookies and temporary files, verified the settings were still at low, then closed and restarted IE. As a test, I’ve been trying two things, and it seems that despite my efforts, I’m not cookied. The things I’ve tried are:

i) Logging onto the SDMB (I’m set to be cookied), closing IE, re-opening IE, and going back to the SDMB. Not cookied - it wants me to log in again.

ii) Going to Yahoo! groups and trying to get past the adult content warning (which was never a problem before, as my age is in my Yahoo! profile). I click “Accept” or whatever, but it just sends me back to the adult content warning page.

I’ve tried reverting to an earlier version of IE (uninstalling is virtually impossible), and resetting the security levels to low there. No change.

I have no firewall installed. My ISP says nothing in their settings would block cookies from being used or saved.

How do I fix this? I’m cursing Microsoft. Their knowledge base is of no use. I know how to set security levels, dammit!

I didn’t have this problem before. I’m considering downloading Netscape…

Please help!

Micro$ucks!

Using Netscape 7.1 with no problems. Only thing that bugs me is that pictures and graphics take a split second longer to load.

>> My security (now “privacy”) settings are all set to low or “accept all cookies,”

I think you are mixing things up. Security and privacy are different things but since you are talking about cookies go to Privacy - Advanced and set it there. I’ll tell you what I do:
Check override automatic cookie handling
Check both BLOCK first and third party cookies
Check Always allow session cookies.
Click OK

Now go to WEBSITES (still in privacy) and allow cookies only for the SDMB and any other sites you want to autorise (I have my bank access site and things like that).

Now you have persistent cookies authorised only for the sites you authorised and session cookies for all others.

Maybe I am missing something but can you explain to me how your post answers the question of how to correctly configure the cookie settings in Internet Explorer 6?

It doesn’t answer the question. I was just pointing out that I got fed up with IE and downloaded Netscape, and it’s giving me far less grief.

Anyway, I tried the “Always allow” thing for the SDMB domain (boards.straightdope.com/sdmb - which IE translated into straightdope.com), then logged in, closed IE, re-opened IE, went to the SDMB - no dice. Not cookied.

Regardless if I missed a step in there, it’s bloody ridiculous to have to do this when I’ve never had to do this before (must be the lovely service pack, thanks Micro$not). It’s downright annoying to all at once have to remember all the sites I want to allow cookies for and enter them one by one.

This household is finished with IE and its “bugs by design.”

Thanks anyway, sailor.

Yes, you’re missing the fact that that update was provided by the OP.

Q.E.D., hit the nail on the head. That’s what I had missed. never mind what I said there. I promise to start paying attention.

scott evil, It’s not that you have to do that. I am running the same IE6 and patches and do not have your problem. The configuration I gave you is the way to not allow cookies except for those sites you want. I do not think you can blame MS for giving you configuration options.

It seems your IE is not working as designed. You might want to try this: Control Panel, Add/remove programs, MS Internet Explorer 6 and SP1. Click add/remove and you get a dialog box with an option to “repair”. That should check the integrity of the files etc.

Another thing you can do is start, run, SFC (system file checker) and see if that discovers anything.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, sailor. I’m not blaming M$ for giving me more configuration options. I’m complaining about how everything’s been moved around (well, moved to a new tab), and that the cookie and security conifguration experience is now more complicated.

My other option, besides trying to fix IE, is to continue using Netscape. I think that’s what I’ll be doing.
