It started weeks ago. I was using IE8. I just upgraded to IE9 and it is still doing it. Every so often I get a message that IE has stopped working. I close and then it recovers the page. I have the latest Adobe flash player installed.
It does not do this on any other site, only the SD.
No solution, only acknowledgment that the same thing was happening to me, to the point that I’ve now switched to Chrome for pulling up this site. It does seem to have taken care of the problem, but it’s not really the solution I wanted. Seems like I should be able to accomplish my web surfing on a single browser.
A couple of other sites don’t work quite as well for me on IE compared to Chrome, but the Straight Dope is the only one that causes outright crashes.
I’ve used IE9 for a long time and have no problems using it on the board.
Which I know is meaningless to you but … just an observation.
So we need to find out what’s different with your experience and why it’s not working so well for you. If you can’t switch to something that seems to be more acceptable (like Chrome, which works pretty good for me as well) then I guess we’ll need to look at your situation more closely. What is your machine, operating system (details please)? What do you see before it crashes, if anything? Do you have any error messages?
The SDMB has not had a software change in years, so anything that is happening now that was not happening before, chances are it’s on your side. I’m not trying to dismiss your problem, not at all, just saying.
Actually some people have reported that when on IE11 SDMB pages don’t render correctly, so perhaps upgrading that far is not a good idea.
I’m currently on IE10 – and I have the box unchecked in “About” so that IE doesn’t automatically upgrade.
Mostly I do use Chrome but I keep IE for some things – it’s my default when checking additions to the front page, for instance.
Let’s see if we can figure out what’s making IE crash for those of you having problems. There’s nothing on the bottom of the page but hyperlinks, so I don’t see how that would be an issue.
Let me see if I can get someone with more technical expertise to weigh in as well.
Sorry you’re having problems. The SDMB has run the same version of vBulletin for several years now. The server has changed but appears to be stable. That’s the only change we’ve had in the longest time. So why is this an issue now?
Just for anyone’s information - if you upgrade to IE 10 and some sites don’t work, switch to Compatibility View for those sites. There’s a little button next to the address bar on the top that has an icon on it that looks like a torn piece of paper. Click that, it should refresh, and the site will render using the old IE engine and it will generally solve your problems.
Once you put a site in Compatibility View it will remain there any time you visit.
If you upgrade to IE 11, the Compatibility View site list will be wiped out (probably because they want you to reevaluate your need for Compatibility on sites with your new browser version). Also the button is gone. However, you can simply go to the gear icon at the tip right and choose “Compatibility View Settings” and add a site to your list for IE 11, just like you had in IE 10.
Anyway… Upgrade your browser. Use Compatibility View. Be awesome to each other.
