SDMB crashing

Anyone else having problems with their browser constantly crashing and restarting when viewing this board? I figured it was a buggy flash ad, so I put this site in the restricted zone and that solved the problem.

Reported for forum change.

Moved to ATMB.

Yep; for what, about a week now? Every time, any time of day, and only this message board. Would crash and re-load, sometimes several times in a row.

Terribly annoying.

I switched to Chrome (which I normally don’t use) and it stopped… so far. Was using Explorer (don’t judge me!) whatever the newest version is (updated after the problem started; it continued.)

Glad to see it wasn’t just me.

Yeah, now that you mention it, kinda, sorta, maybe.

I am using an old version of Linux (Release 9.10) with Gnome 2.28.1 and Firefox 3.6.9.
NO anti-malware software running; NO Firefox add-ons, no ad-blockers. NO Flash or any other media-viewing software installed. Firefox configured to run with JavaScript DISabled (most of the time).

And every once in a while, I get a weird crash. It only seems to happen when I am typing text into a multi-line text box (notably, when I am typing a post like this one now), and I press the ENTER key at the end of a line or paragraph. Then Firefox crashes and, strangely, I either get logged out of my own computer or get put into a “locked screen” mode.

That is, I have a screen that looks like a “locked screen” unlock screen (enter user name and password), and then the regular Gnome screen appears again. As soon as I re-start Firefox, all the tabs I had open get re-opened and re-loaded, even the tab where I was typing in my post, and I am still logged into SDMB, and even the post I was in the middle of typing is mostly still there.

This almost certainly looks to me like some bug in my own machine, and NOT something that would be happening because of anything any web page contains. Web pages aren’t “active” to begin with, since I am running with JavaScript turned off.

I’ve described all the above in detail just in case it’s helpful to anybody, although I really doubt that.

(ETA: This is happening infrequently, but not just recently.)

Both my home and work PC’s crash frequently the last few months - often when opening an SMDB thread. I tended to think there was something in the embedded ads that was messing up.

Yup.

Yes, including twice in the last five minutes.

Not crashing for me. Windows XP and 7, Firefox, a paying member without ads.

Happened 3x this morning right as I discovered the site. I use IE.

I don’t log on when I’m at the office, so I get the ads. It crashes IE.

Another data point:

In Chrome (which I switched to for this reason) I just got a message that shockwave flash had crashed; this froze all my open Dope windows. More evidence that the problem lies with advertising, perhaps?

It’s definitely an ad crashing browsers. It doesn’t happen when I’m logged in.

Paying member using Firefox. No ads, no crashes.

Not sure if you all are talking about the ‘‘Tab Recovered’’ problem discussed in the similar thread here in ATMB. But I posted a simple solution in that thread that seems to work for me and at least one other person. Apologies if you all are talking about a different problem.

Same here. Among all the glitches – or are they features? I can never remember – I’ve not encountered this one.

I’ve never encountered similar problems. I’m running Flashblock, but I have javascript enabled, and don’t use any actual ad blocker, so my guess would be badly coded Flash-based ads.

Having trouble with this site in IE for the past week, maybe two. No trouble in either Firefox or Opera. Crash, re-open, crash.

I use Google Chrome and it happens every third or fourth day, I’d say.

Another symptom of our server problem. Sorry.

(I should just merge all these threads together.)
