Internet Explorer right-click menu problem.

At some point, somehow, the following problem attached itself to my copy of IE, and I can’t seem to get rid of it. Whenever I right-click within IE, the pop-up menu includes – between “Refresh” and “Backward Links” – the following declaration:

sigh

It doesn’t do anything if you click on it, but it’s embarassing if others are around, and I don’t know how to scrub it off. Ideas?

You’ve got some kind of malware. Be it virus, spyware, or adware. If you haven;t already, run Spybot Search and Destroy. (If you don’t have it, get it here

Also get AVG Antivirus from here.

(If you already have a spyware and/or anti-virus, then update and run those.)

If the problem still persists, then it’s more serious. Get Hijackthis. ONLY DO A SCAN! Do not delete or remove anything. Hijackthis lists even legitimate things, so tun it, and then post the log here and we can go from there.

I meant to add: Rad the sticky at the top of the forum. I basically gave a very very brief summary of whatis in there, but read it and follow all the steps.

Oh, and don’t use IE, use Firefox. Sooooooo much better.

You need to enter the registry, but there may be multiple locations to look at.

Click Start - Run, type: “regedit”, hit enter. This opens the registry.

Locate the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt

You may also do a search for the strings “FREE PORN GALLERIES” and “sexmaxx”.

Report back on what you find.

Ooops, by doing a search I mean doing it within the Registry. A warning should also be in order, be careful of adding or removing registry items as this may seriously screw up your computer.

A Google search reveals that other people have had similar problems.

For example, here and here.

I recommend, as others have said, running HijackThis and posting your log here or, even better, on a tech forum. When you run the log, you’ll probably find an entry that looks something like this:

O8 - Extra context menu item: >>> FREE PORN GALLERIES <<< - javascript:{document.location=‘http://sexmaxx.com/freegalleries.htm’;}

This needs to go, but it’s not the only thing. People will only be able to give you complete advice once they see your log. And, as bouv said, be carfeful about what you delete, because HijackThis simply tells you what’s running on your computer. It makes no distinction between good and bad things.
