I am using IE 6, SP1. I am having a problem that IE will freeze on loading, and then not respond to typing in boxes (such as this one) as well as freezing when I try to scroll down the page. It freezes completely so I am not able to minimize it or even right click on the toolbarand close it. Delays can last from 30 seconds to a terminal freeze. My cache has been cleared, history deleted, cookies erased, everything I could think of. I updated all patches needed for my OS (Win ME), as well as for the browswer itself. I have virus scaned with a shareware trial version program that I found online but there were no viruses detected. I would uninstall IE and reinstall it if I could but the MS site doesnt seem to have the full version setup file for IE online that I can get to before my browswer freezes. It is very frustrating and am not sure what else to try, or if there is a worm/virus that I might not know of that is affecting my system. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions?
Oh and before someone comments on how I posted this, I am browsing from work and not from home where the problem is
No one?
Ehm, download Mozilla or something to download the IE installer, and if that doesn’t work, just keep using Mozilla/Opera/whatever.
Aside from that, I assume this is Windows 2000 or XP. What other programs do you have running? Have you tried scandisk/defrag (hey, sometimes it works)?
Wacky things happened to me all the time when I had WinME installed.
But before you throw down $300 for a new OS, try updating your graphics drivers. You might actually want to downgrade your IE to 5.5, because 6.0 also has some issues all of it’s own.
If this is a recent development, I suggest you search your system for stealth/spyware/parasite programs. They are often so badly written that they will destroy your browsing capabilities, resulting in error messages, numerous pop-up adds and/or browser freezes.
Try going to www.doxdesk.com. This page will identify some of the most common parasites if they are on your system and give you removal instructions. I don’t know if the page scans your system (if it does, it only takes a few seconds), but as most parasite programs usually attempt to log each page you visit, doxdesk may get its information by what programs try to interact with it.
If your browser won’t operate long enough to allow you to get to doxdesk, you may want to download a parasite finder like “Adaware” or “Spybot” from work and install it on your system at home. You do not have to be logged into the internet for these programs to do their work.
thanks I’ll try that
OK… NOthing worked…
This is starting to get PIT WORTHY…
I HATE M$. I cannot get rid of IE completely, even if I WANT to reinstall it fresh. I beg all assistance.
I’ve had something similar with IE5, where it would lock hard because of entering text into an input box. It turned out that Autocomplete was turned on, and it’s lookup list (or whatever) was completely hosed. Ever since I’ve never had that feature turned on, so I’m not sure if it could be causing your IE6 error.
Try going into the “Internet Options”, go to the “Content” tab, then into the Autocomplete dialog. Clear forms and passwords, and (unless you really like the feature) turn it off.
