Have problem using Internet Explorer on my computer.

I’m a bit awkward with computer-speak so I hope I can explain this clearly.

For the last several weeks, I’ve had a problem opening windows on my Internet Explorer program. If I open three windows (or, if some windows open up involuntarily due to pop-up ads), my Internet Explorer gets stuck. I try to close the window and it won’t respond. I have to hit Control+Alt+Delete to close them in which case I have to leave the web site I’m viewing. (Fortunately, I don’t have to go off-line and/or reboot since my server is unaffected.) Moreover, my History function on my Internet Explorer will not record that I’ve been to the web site.

Since the problem cropped up, I’ve downloaded and installed Internet Explorer 6 but the glitch is still there. I’ve also scanned, defragmented, cleaned, ran virus checks, and everything else I can think of (e.g., uninstalling and reinstalling the program) to solve the problem but nothing seems to help. I don’t have this problem with any of the other programs on my computer. Any advice on what else I can do short of hiring someone?

For the record, I own a three year old PC with an ADM processor (700 mhz) and 20 GB of memory (of which about 3.5 GB remains unused on my C Drive–the one the Internet Explorer runs on). I use Windows 98 with some Windows 2000 upgrades (i.e., Works). I still use a 56K phone modem :frowning: and my ISP is Juno.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

I have suffered the same thing and I often also use the three finger salute but I believe what you have may not really be a frozen page but a page which is loading and if you wait enough it will eventually respond when it has loaded.

Your problem may be due to more than one cause. I would check your temporary internet files settings first. To do this, click on Tools>Internet Options and under temporary internet files click on Settings. Check the amount of disk space used for temp. files in this window, I keep mine at about 80. Also from the Internet Options window (the previous one from the temp. files settings), you may try deleting your temporary files and cookies. Keep in mind, deleting cookies will erase such things as stored passwords and usernames at some sites. I have also noticed that sometimes all of these files aren’t removed. To manually do this, Right click your start menu, then explore. Locate C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Contents IE. Manually delete the contents of these folders (if there is a large amount of files in them, use Edit>Select all then delete). Your low hard drive space could also be causing problems. Try removing any un-needed programs, and then defrag again. I, as a rule, try keeping 5 GB free on my 30 GB HD. One more I can think of is modem drivers, though I would think unlikely, but with PC’s it seems the unlikely is usually likely.

A useful site that will analyse your PC’s performance, and give you suggestions on how to fix them is at [http://www.pcpitstop.com/](PC pitstop). I’ve found some of their suggestions very helpful. Hope something in there was of help!!

You could look around in IE preference settings… usually there are lots of options you could try. Like reuse windows or make a new one.
