The internet is crazy right now. If you aren’t HYPER AWARE, you gonna get hoodwinked with AI, skits, bits, tricks, sneak ads, dark money content creators pretending to be on your side, double dealing tech bro billionaire rage baiting engagement farming bunnies on trampolines chaos.
And verily, I say onto you… had I not cut my teeth on this message board and been in battle with members who demanded clarity, sources, cites, good faith, and focus, or by god you were ripped to shreds… had I not had this message board to get me right in the market of free ideas and debate … I would be a puddle of bubbling pulp by now.
I credit this board with making sure I can handle this bladerunner ass dystopian reality we in right now. I don’t post here anymore but I sincerely respect this place for the training because I see the World Wide Web and social media eating folks ALIVE right now. Whew!
I agree. The SDMB has set a standard for social media that other places cannot compete with, when it comes to healthy respect for others, or healthy disrespect for those who need to be prodded and pushed into being better people. It’s also somewhere safe to escape to.
'Cause (a) there’s still stuff worth reading/watching out there, (b) there’s still people worth talking to out there and (c) this place doesn’t necessarily have a posting volume to keep me occupied when I want.
Much like the OP, I, too, credit this board (and a college education) with my reliance on clarity, sources, cites, good faith, and focus when digesting and/or propagating information.
As the Flying Spaghetti Monster is my witness, every public school in this country needs to start teaching Media Literacy from Kindergarten, else we’ll have a class of voters and consumers in this country who will fall for anything. Oh, wait…
Even with pretty restricted social media (consisting of corresponding with friends and my avocational groups), my email and the ads I see when I use my phone for august sites such as this one serve up an endless stream of false enthusiastic promises intended to part me from my money and identity. The cesspool comes for me even if I don’t click on it.
