Interview at Dept. of Entomology!

I got the opportunity to interview at MSU’s Dept. of Entomology today and I’m really excited about the job and the possibility of maybe getting the position!

It’s for a Technical Typist position; it would involve desktop publishing, typing grants, newsletters, etc plus they want the position to work into being a back up for the webmaster/computer services person, which I’m very interested in also. It sounds like the job would have alot of variety, independence, and creativity, which are all things I value in a position.

During the interview, they (of course) asked about my long term goals and I let them know I had applied for the nursing program at my local community college but didn’t know if I’d been accepted yet (and wouldn’t know until May). They asked more about it and said," well, at least you are up front about it". When they asked how I would work it out going to school full time and this position (which is full time), I said,“well, in an ideal world, I would go to school full time, work during the times I wasn’t in class and then work after hours.” It didn’t seem to phase them too much. Actually, the interview went really well and continued for another 1/2 hour, plus they showed me the office I would work in if I got the position.

I’m so psyched about it! Both ladies I interviewed with were really nice and said the staff is pretty much like a family - they do lots of research and don’t have too many undergrads; mostly post-doc and graduate students.

I think I was about the last of their interview because they said they were finishing up interviews today and would be making decisions on who to bring back by next week.

Keep your fingers crossed for me or in your prayers!

Sorry this is so long - I’m just really excited about it! MSU has incredible benefits, decent pay (even though I’d have to take a small to medium paycut to take the job), plus incredible educational benefits (that also apply to the local community college my nursing program would be at!). I could also probably ride my bike to work.

Okay, I’ll stop talking now!!

Good luck. I know it’s going to bug you until you find out.

That sounds great, Bunny. I wish you luck. Of course, if you wanna move to Toledo, I could get you our vacant office manager position right now.

And that’s a really bad pun, Mjollnir.

Will you be called BuggyGirl if you get the job?

Hey, don’t be a pest! You’re just trying to worm your way in with me, aren’t you? Hey, I gotta fly, it’s time for lunch.

Okay, I’ll stop. I’m sure others are better at the pun game than I am although I hope I can hold my own, at times.

Unc, thanks for the offer - since I don’t want to move (we just bought a house), I think the commute would be too long. Plus, 2 people working in the same place that post on the Board - I don’t know - sounds like trouble!!

Good for you! You will let us know, won’t you, what happens? Personally, I’m going to start doing the happy dance right now–being the eternal optimist.

You’ve got my fingers and toes crossed and my prayers, too. Yay, Bunny!!

Ummm, struuter are you saying you’ve got your prayers crossed? How do you do that?

Well, I was going to try to play the pun game, but I had a mental block and BunnyGirl did better than I ever could’ve anyway.

Sounds like the interview went well, Bunnygirl. I hope things work out for you there!

Stinker. I should have put some form of punctuation in there. My fault.

And if it’s possible for someone to get prayers crossed, honey, you can bet I’d be the goof to do it.

Right on, Bun!

Best of luck,

Keeping my antennae and palps crossed for you too!

I got it. I’m freakin’ out!

Actually, I had to do a lot of soul searching because they do want the job to remain 8-5 and that would kind of preclude me from staying there and going to nursing school in the fall (if I get accepted). So, I was thinking “gee, do I want to take this job with them thinking that I’m going to put my nursing school on hold or do I want to stay where I am and just go on with my plans.” Now, most of you are saying at this point, “so what’s the big deal? Just take it”. Well, I didn’t want to be misleading to them, didn’t want to be dishonest etc.

However, I talked with a good friend of mine who helped me get a better objective view of my goals and kind of sort things out regarding my motives for going to nursing school. Mostly, I think, is that the last two years for me since I moved home from Tennessee (where I had a job I loved) have been so frustrating career-wise that maybe I thought of the qualities I wanted in a job and nursing just happened to fit those. Not that I’m giving it up - it’s still definately an option but I could see from my talk with my friend last night that my motives for pursuing it weren’t the best or the most rock-solid.

Anyway, I didn’t even have to go back for a second interview. The office manager is going to check with HR today to get “final approval” and then call me back so I can put in my two weeks notice. Their benefits rock. I can take up to 14 credit hours per year FREE. Not to mention a great 401(k) type plan, medical etc etc ad nauseum. I am so excited. I will be able to ride my bike to work during good months because MSU is right off the River Trail near my house. I’ll be starting at the max of my paygrade which means I’ll have to actually move up a paygrade to get any more money, but I’m not taking this job for the money. The pay will be a little more than I make here so that’s fine.

YES!! YES!! YES!! Thank you one and all for your good thoughts for me!!

Good for you!!!

hip hip horay!

YESSS!! Good for you! does happy dance Oh, I’m so happy for you! They must have caught a glimpse of that inner-sparkle that we are so familiar with.

Way to go!

yeehah, happy news!!! good luck with the new job.

Good job, Bunny!

Say, I’m right across the state line. I don’t suppose they have anything for a jilted conservation biologist with some experience, do they?

Congrats!

Can you ask them a question for me? If you pull the wings off of a fly, does it become a walk?

I crack me up.

Congratulations, BG!

Before I opened this thread, I was CERTAIN that “Interview at the Department of Entomology” was some sort of code for a veiled sexual activity. Like “Going to the Submarine Races” or “Selling Vegetables to Resistance Fighters.”

*“So long, Pop, Daisy Mae and I are going to interview at the Department of Entomology!”

“Oh, so that’s what you kids are calling it these days…?”*

thanks, one and all!

Ogre, check out their web site. I think you may be able to find postings at http://www.hr.msu.edu.

C’mon up!

Congratulations on getting the job Buggy, er, BunnyGirl (sorry, couldn’t resist :))!

BTW, what are you going to take with your free credit hours?
