I’m desperately trying to relocate back to Columbus OH from Louisville KY. Right now, I’m in the “prepare to start” stage. But the obvious question becomes: How do I interview for jobs in a city 3+ hours away?

Currently, I have a job in Louisville, and I only have 2 sick days in which to use to interview anyway (I work 8:30-5:30 M-F). How do people who are working in city A interview for jobs in city B!!! Maybe I’m missing something…

Note: I do have friends in Columbus I can stay with, and I’m very familiar with the terrain, so to speak. It’s not getting the interviews I’m worried about… it’s getting to them!

You explain to the potential employers that you are in town on x days, and schedule all your interviews on those days. Most companies are pretty understanding about these things.

If they are not available to interview you on those days and you can’t go back another day, they might be willing to do an interview by phone.

See if you can do the preliminary interviews by phone, then when both you and they are convinced that there is a good match, arrange the travel for the face-to-face interview.
