I’ll grant you that we’ve got more liberals than the normal rlgatherings, more atheists . but morality? there’s a 6 page pile on ragging on a woman who was bragging about cheating on her hubby. at most folks are saying ‘if it wasn’t an open marriage in the first place, you owe it to him to tell him now’. additionally, I’ve routinely seen pile ons for folks who steal - from the woman who bragged about her husband taking stuff from work after he’d been fired/let go or whatever, to the woman who bounced a check at a home party.
that’s very traditional morality , IME
Crap! I slept through another poll I guess.
wring beat me to it. I have been really encouraged by the mass support shown for morality in thread like the one wring mentioned.
As for a majority of this board being against God, I don’t know whether it’s really a majority of all Dopers, or just the ones who shout the loudest in Great Debates.
I’m pretty sure God can take care of that problem himself, without your advice.
You try telling that to the Spanish Inquisition.
okay, okay
I wasn’t expe…
Nope, can’t do it.
When we have had polls on the subject, which admittedly are not going to be entirely reliable, IIRC atheists/agnostics accounted for somewhere around 40-45% of the respondents. While much higher than the general population, it is unlikely that even here this group makes up a majority. Since many agnostics wouldn’t agree that they are “against God,” the percentage who would ascribe to that would be even smaller.
The percentage of really militant atheists on the board is obscured I think by a few extremely vocal individuals in GD.
The majority of this board is against God? Not that I’ve seen. In fact some of the most respected posters on this board believe in God.
Conservatism. After six years of Conservative government in America even some conservatives are getting disillusioned with it.
Morality. I think you will find this is one of the most moral boards on the internet. Just because the majority of people don’t agree with your morality does not make them any less moral.
Traditional values. What traditional values are these? Sending children down the mines? Slave labour? Domestic violence? The woman as property of her husband? If you could let us know what traditional values then you might be able to make a case, but until then I will just take this as threadshitting.
And because this is the pit, fuckwit.
Man, I wish Bobbo would post more often. He’s a total wacko right-wing so-conservative-he’s-not-sure-fire-is-a-good-idea (with apologies to David Eddings) nut. I love reading his stuff, but he never sticks around to defend it. Likely, he knows he’ll get torn to pieces.
He never calls, He never writes…
Don’t mind if I do. Some other cat yoga positions - Scratching Ear Balanced On Three Legs; Head Tucked Completely Under Something; Long, Stretched-out Kitty; and my personal favourite, Passed Out On Human.
wow! my cat is a yogamaster!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-body can do the Spanish Inquisition!
Not even God.
Pretty funny.
Of course I’m sure you realize he is always calling and has written everything we need. {According to reliable sources}
That’s funny. You’re wrong wrong and more wrong, and you say, *they’ll * look like the idiot.
The majority of this board is not against God and definitely not morality. I’m not sure what you call conservatism. Hopefully you’re not including this lying corrupt scumbags in our current admin. I have respect for the reasoned sincere honest conservative and will agree on certain issues. A growing number of that kind of conservative realize that our current admin do not represent the kind of conservative they are.
Traditional values is a meaningless political phrase, like Christian values or American values. Real values, like honesty, integrity, compassion, courage, etc are universal to humanity and nobody owns them.
I am happy to deflate the puffery of a defiantly undereducated would-be pedant. Bursting bubbles is fun, if they’re legitimately offered. (See the speed-of-light thread in the Cecil’s Columns forum, frex.) What I won’t do is play ball when it looks to me like an obviously manufactured facade. Bottom line, I don’t buy the OP and I won’t reward its creator by dancing just because the song is familiar. However, while I may think it’s a transparent attempt at manipulating board behavior, that doesn’t mean y’all should pass up the opportunity for a few easy chuckles, so I retract that element of my previous post. Knock yourselves out; I just won’t be joining in.
He was able to figure all this out with just one post?
Damn.
Efficient.
See, my post was proof of the zerg rush one faces on this board After further review, I’ll concede the “morality” issue in most regards, as I did see the cheating thread earlier. BUT by “morality” I was meaning a traditional view of morality, with regards to marriage, sex and drugs. Generally, liberals tend to be a little more lenient on those issues, and there are more liberals on this board than conservatives, meaning there is less traditional morality. So showing support of traditional morality can get you attacked around here, for an example see the post where I said I didn’t agree with a woman poster here who didn’t want to get married and have kids…pretty sure it was about 4 pages of personal attacks for expressing my “traditional” opinion.
As for conservatism, well personally I’m more libertarian and I’m not going to defend this administration or the current crop of conservatives, and even with regards to the sex and drugs things I stated above, I’m liberal in that regard. I don’t want the government telling me or anyone what to do unless they are harming others. But someone expressing conservative ideas here will likely be shot down moreso than outside of the internet, as there is a lower percentage of conservative members on the SDMB than in the real world.
And for God, there is a higher proportion of atheists on this board than in the general public. I’m not sure if that’s just a “young” thing, but I believe a recent survey showed 82% of the country were Christians, and about 10% atheists. I’m betting that greater than 10% of the SDMB is atheist, which is why I said that comments regarding God are generally hot topics around here.
And thank you for proving my final point rayh.
See, that was reasonable. Post like that.
