invisible guests?

Once yesterday, and then once today, I saw there was a new post in a thread I’m following. I’d click “go to first new post” and … there would be nothing there. Go back – yup, new post by [guestname]. “Go to first new post” – nada. Click on [guestname] for profile – the profile would be there. Click on “find all posts by…” and … nothing. (Different [guestname] in each case.)

What’s up? Are these socks or other bannees? If so, why do the posts disappear before the other evidence of their presence?

I had a similar experience today. I was on the main forums page, and there was a thread title shown as the latest post in General Questions. When I went to GQ there was no thread with that title. I went back and forth several times, then clicked on the thread name on the forums page. I got the “You are not authorized to view this thread” message.

My guess is that the mods have been finding and cracking down on socks and disappearing threads that they start and posts that they make in existing threads.

To clarify, the rest of the thread is there, right? Just not the allegedly new post?

If a post is deleted (for any reason), the post itself is gone, and won’t show up in the thread, but the listing on the forum page will not change (at least, not until someone else posts to the thread). It sounds like this could explain what you’re seeing.

Yes, that’s it – but wouldn’t the person’s profile show their status as “Banned,” instead of “Guest”?

Sounds like you’re seeing it as the situation is in process. The staff is working through the steps, moving posts and etc. Sometimes it takes a little longer than at other times for all that to work through the system.

(We’ve had some persistent sock/troll types lately.)
