iphone 4S just announced

That’s simply beautiful.

So how do you find Siri works? I just get bad deja vu of trying to work with Dragon Naturally speaking back 5 years ago or so, and damn near killing my laptop.

RIM is trying to buy back my love, and as soon as I figure out how to get my free Vlingo, I’m curious if any droid or BB users can compare the experience on the two for me!

Go into Settings>General>Accessibility, and turn on “Custom Vibrations”. Now you can go into each Contact and tap out a specific vibration pattern on the screen.

I keep my phone on silent almost all the time, and it’s usually in my pocket… so now I know who’s calling without taking my phone out.

It just does! If you don’t confuse her with multiple people speaking at the same time or very fast, she will understand what you say and give you a sensible response. The programmers even put in some whimsical responses that are really fun to play with (“I love you.” - " You don’t even know me."). It’s really amazing, I’ve never seen speech recognition work so well (although she did interpret “What’s the third element of the period table?” as “What’s the third element of the. Table.” )

Stupid question: How do you silence the phone to set it to vibrate only? I can turn the volume all the way down, but the ring tones are still audible. I need it silent.

There should be a little switch on the side. Flip it.

OK, this is RAD.

I have little patience for technology that doesn’t work. I’ve never found any voice recognition system to be worthwhile to use, including the “Voice Control” feature on previous-generation iPhones. It only worked (in the sense of correctly recognizing what was asked) about 60% of the time, and any time savings from the feature itself was completely obliterated by the time spent fixing the mistakes.

Siri is the first such system that I have not grown disgusted with, and I actually find myself using it more and more. It works correctly about 95% of the time, and for certain things it gets pretty close to 100%.

I’ve never bothered to use the calendar system on my phone before, because it was such a pain in the ass to set up appointments (bring up the calendar app, find the date you want, tap new, tap the start time, set the time, tap the end time, set the time, write a label, etc.) Now, I just bring the phone up to my ear and say “Schedule an appointment from 2 pm to 4 pm on Friday with Susan”, and it does it. A major time-saver. Similarly, you can say things like “Remind me in an hour to turn on the dishwasher”, and it will do so.

I started a thread a few weeks ago to ask for opinions on the newest Blackberry models. My BB was broken and I was stuck in RIM-world due to work restrictions. Just as I was about to order my new one my company announced support for the iPhone using a 3rd party for corporate mail support. I got the 4s on the 14th (I was 6th in line and was in and out of the Verizon store with my shiny new iPhone in 20 minutes.)

Man… this thing makes my BB look like a tin can on a string. I’ve been using a BB for years and years and was comfortable with it (it is still the best for work e-mail) but this baby is fantastic. I haven’t found much I can’t do with it (other than set it to automatically power off and on at specific times.) I do wish the screen was a bit larger, but I’m not complaining. I have had spotty success with SIRI. I’m enjoying her sassy replies to silly questions, but when I asked her where to find the nearest donut shop she inexplicably initiated a phone call with a random guy in my address book I hadn’t talked to in years… On the other hand, I can RDP my work desktop from my phone which is so incredibly useful I can’t believe it.

I have this with my iPad, and it’s a real treat to use your apple dealy as a client computer. If your work desktop is a PC, consider buying splashtop. It has sound support and internet discovery via gmail!

Cool! Thanks!

Yeah, I love Splashtop. Very slick and easy to set up. It’s so easy that I will often use it to connect to my PC while watching TV… even though my PC is about five feet behind me.

The one I bought was Jump Desktop and I love it. I thought navigating my PC on the iPhone screen would be a chore but the controls are so well-designed that it works great.
