iPhone 7 removal of headphone jack: hate it or love it

Yeah, about that…

A really sneaky way of the company making more money now!! They going to make lots o money of those earbuds now.

Apple as company is getting worse as the years go by.

I’m just setting up my new iPhone 7 now. I don’t use the headphone jack so it doesn’t bother me at all.

You never listen to music or podcasts off your phone?

I do, but it’s Bluetooth all the way. BT headphones, BT adapters for my home stereo and car stereo, even a small pair of Bluetooth speakers. I never make use of the jack on my phone. I even have a smart watch with BT connectivity and a speaker that streams music from my phone.

How in the world is it sneaky? This one of the most reported changes to a cellphone’s hardware since…probably the first iPhone. And they’re not going to make their “sneaky” money off of earbuds - they’re going to make it on the $20 dongles to adapt your 3.5mm aux to lightning.

Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there! That’s hilarious that you didn’t even get the joke!

What is the sound of stuff falling into a quarry?

I got it just fine. What would make you think otherwise?

You might need to recalibrate your irony detector. It might have been knocked out of commission by all the stuff you’re throwing in the quarry.

How are they going to do that, as there’s one free with every iPhone 7? And a replacement one costs a whole $9?

I’m curious: how much power does a phone use while driving headphones directly, via the 3.5mm jack, and how much does it use transmitting audio to Bluetooth headphones that have their own battery?

I think you can get the actual specs somewhere in Apple’s support site, but the Bluetooth uses much more battery [ETA: than the headphone jack] when actually transmitting (modern bluetooth is pretty good when it’s quiescent). The battery in the headphones doesn’t help with the power needed to broadcast.

That said, the same phone also has broadcasting of cellular and wifi, and receivers for all three of those plus GPS, so it’s in a wash of other things that are on all/most of the time. And bluetooth is on all the time anyway for many people to allow pairing with things like car speakers and the Handoff integration on other iOS/Mac devices.

Actually, I suspect BT has lower power requirements, but it depends on how loud your are playing your music.

Really? No wonder they gripe about battery life. I never leave wifi, GPS, or bluetooth on when I am not specifically using them.

They likely aren’t free. The price quoted includes them.
When I was in the cell phone world, we loved it when we could include accessories in-box, because it was a guaranteed sale.

Absolutely hate it! I will never buy a phone without a 3.5mm jack.

Reason… you can’t charge and use your headphones/earphones at the same time.

I shall NOT be replacing all of my equipment (that uses 3.5mm, which is most of it) just for a new phone to work.

For example, I was listening to music earlier on my Galaxy S4, and the battery was drained quite quickly. This was using standard 3.5mm headphones.
On the return journey, I needed to charge up my phone, via my portable powerbank. Now… if my phone was an iPhone 7, I’d have to choose whether to not have any music, or use the adapter and drain the battery completely down to zero…
Not practical at all… and Bluetooth is more power hungry than 3.5mm so not an option!

Why didn’t Apple think of this?! :smack:

Then you’re both atypical, and going through a lot of effort to save maybe 10 or 20% battery life. These things are tuned pretty well at this point.

10 to 20% of battery life can be significant. 10% of 24 hours is 2 hours and 24 minutes. And if like in my case your wifi and bluetooth are simply off from when first set up upon unboxing, you’d be going through very little effort.

I’m not sure what you are trying say here.

Apple is selling earbuds and they going make lots of money of those earbuds.

So some one buys iPhone 7 and Apple makes profit and they buy earbuds and Apple makes more profit.

In the past you did not need those earbuds.

You still don’t need them. Apple includes a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter with the iPhone 7 so you can still use regular ear buds.
