iPhone 7 removal of headphone jack: hate it or love it

As well as other Bluetooth headphones.

It’s almost no effort. One swipe and touch to turn any of these on or off (on my non-Apple phone). Less than one-half second per operation.

First, I’ll bet that you do end up eventually buying a phone with a 3.5mm jack. Maybe not this year, maybe not next, but eventually you will.

Second, I can use my BT headset and charge the phone at the same time with no problems. Im not sure why you would think this cannot be done.

And that’s fine. It’s no skin off my back if you do this; I’m just pointing out that it’s unusual. For example, if I were to turn off Wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS all the time, I wouldn’t get: mail, iMessages, or location-based reminders; my phone wouldn’t be backed up or sync with iTunes, numerous apps would have out of-date information that I’d have to wait to download, my smartwatch would be mostly inert, and handOff would’t keep my current web pages and email in sync between the phone and the various desktops I’m at, my wife wouldn’t be able to locate me. I could do some of the above on the cellular link, but that’s hundreds of times more expensive than wifi, has a limited amount of data available, and uses about seven times the energy. At that point, why have a smartphone instead of some old flip-thingy?

If this were actually costing me convenience, I might think about turning some of it off, but as it is, I have to charge my phone every third day instead of every fourth. Big deal.

So it buy the earbuds or buy the adapter?

So if you don’t want to buy Apple earbuds and just use regular headphones you will need to have adapter!!

You don’t have to buy anything. Apple includes both a set of Lightning earbuds and an adapter for 3.5mm earbuds in the box.

The only thing you would need an adapter for is to charge the phone and listen on earbuds at the same time, and I can understand why people are angry about this. If you work in an office and listen to music while you work, it’s nice to be able to charge your phone at your desk so that your battery doesn’t run out of power before you go home. Then, your only choice is a pricy dock or a dual Lightning adapter.

So if understand Apple gives you the earbuds and adapter when you buy the Phone? In is in the same box?:eek:

How long does the earbuds battery last? And how do you charge the earbuds when the battery gets low?

Can you listen to music and use your phone when you charge it?

You do not appear to be paying attention or comprehending what is being talked about.

“Earbuds” are wired. Apple’s new AirBuds are BT (Bluetooth). The two terms are not interchangeable.

Apple has and will continue to provide earbuds with every new iPhone. The earbuds that accompany the iPhone 7 will have a Lightning connector instead of the 3.5mm connector. The new iPhone 7 will also include an adapter so that earbuds with a 3.5mm connector can be plugged into the Lightning jack on the iPhone 7.

If you want to use earbuds or an aux cable, then no. At least not as the phone is delivered. Belkin will sell an adapter ($40) that when coupled with your dongle, will allow you to do both. I’d guess that the price of these will eventually come down as others (like Amazon Basics) license them.

That’s not the point. He was claiming Apple were going to make a fortune off people buying converters - no they are not since every iPhone 7 owner will have one already.

Maybe some pictures will help.

Lightning earphones. These plug into the Lightning port on the bottom of the phone and are Apple’s included earphones on the iPhone 7.

Lightning to 3.5 mm headphone adapter. Adapts to any regular headphones or earphones through the Lightning port.

They both are included in the box with the iPhone 7. They don’t cost extra. Neither one lets you charge the phone at the same time that you listen to music. Neither one is independently powered. They get their power from the iPhone.

None of my headsets are BT though, they are all 3.5mm. And no I won’t be buying any new until my perfectly good 3.5mm headsets stop functioning.

I still stand by the fact that a 3.5mm headset jack for me, is absolutely essential. More essential than a microSD card slot, which for me is already an essential requirement.

edit: Hooray, someone has thought of a Lightning splitter, so you can use your Lightning to 3.5mm jack in one port and a standard Lightning charging cable in the other! Bulky, and expensive, but hey! Apple should be including these in with the sale of the iPhone 7 though seeing as though they created this mess in the first place.

So to make all the same connections for my hypothetical iPhone 7 as I do now for my Android, I’d need two of those, plus two additional 3.5mm adapters. A total of five accessories for the iPhone, to accomplish what the Android does with none.

The $20 was a hand-waved number I made up - thanks for the correction. It’s still a significant source of what sweaty is considering “sneaky” money - Apple will be making a chunk of change for every proprietary dongle/adapter that people need to buy in order to connect a 3.5mm device. I know I’ll likely have to buy 2-3 in “emergency” situations like being on the road in someone else’s car and having left it at home or something.

To listen to wired headphones and charge at the same time, you now need two accessories: a lightning to double lighting splitter (currently a $40 item but there will be dirt cheap ones before the end of the year) and a lightning to 3.5 mm adaptor (which comes free with the phone). In the next few months there will be $5 splitters that are lightning on one end and the other end will be one lightning and one 3.5 mm.

Why Apple or anyone else would care what someone who would never buy an iPhone ever wants is a mystery to me though. If it wasn’t for Apple, there wouldn’t even be modern smartphones. We’d all have bulky, shitty Blackberries or be trying to text with 10 key dumb phones. Apple realized, and they are right, that most of their users never use the 3.5 mm jack, don’t use it enough that simultaneous charging is an issue or are such fan boys that they’ll buy a couple of dongles and not care.

Go to monoprice in November and pick up five for $12.

I’m doubting neither their availability nor their discounts. But first off, you’re not going to be able to get them that cheap - Monoprice still has to pay a royalty. Their lowest lightning device/adapter/cable I can find is still $7 (and when did Monoprice stop offering bulk discounts to the average consumer? That’s new.). And any time someone needs one from a gas station or Target, they’re going to pay a premium (just like anything else).

I’m still smarting from their moving the headphone jack from the top to the bottom. I still think that was a bad idea.

I hope that the market forces Apple to put back the headphone jack. I hope the iPhone 7 tanks hard. I got my 6s in February, so I’m in no hurry to upgrade.

It is early days yet of course but so far there is no sign of that happening.

You’re correct. I did find some for under $3 from other vendors though. They are probably not licensed but I haven’t had problems with non-licensed stuff in the past except for once when they didn’t work at all and I got a refund.

lol
