iPhone - is there a way to lock the picture view so they don't rotate?

I took a picture of a sheet of music that I want to transcribe.

The sheet was in landscape format, so I held the iPhone with the long sides up and down, to get the best picture. But of course, when I try to rotate the iphone sideways to read the music, the picture flips, and now it’s smaller and harder to read.

Is there any way to lock a picture so it doesn’t rotate if I rotate the iPhone?

Double click the home button
swipe the bottom thing to the right
there will be an icon that has a circular arrow on it, click that
now there will be a lock on that icon and you will be in lock mode

great - thanks!

A better way is to rotate the picture file. In Photos, open the photo and hit Edit, then rotate will be on the bottom left.

Yeah, if you edit the picture then you don’t need to stuff around locking and unlocking the screen rotation.

Locking orientation advantages:
Works with any app, any photo

Rotating photo advantages:
You only need to rotate once, not lock and unlock every time you want to view the photo
Photo will be in the correct orientation on other devices as well

I’m on my second iPhone and am generally pretty knowledgeable about them, but I had no idea this was there – thanks! I knew that the iPad has a hard switch to lock orientation, so I always wondered why they didn’t put one on the iPhone.

Now I can lay on my side in bed and surf the internet without frustration!

Thanks for the very handy info. :):)

The iPad side switch is configurable: Settings >> General; Use Side Switch to:

Choices are either (a) Lock Rotation, or (b) Mute. Whichever is chosen, the other option becomes the “soft switch” where, as described upthread, you double click the Home button, then swipe the bottom “tray” to the right.
