iPhone text tones

So I just noticed that my iPhone 4 has the capability to use different text tones for different contacts…very cool feature I’ve long wanted. However, you can only choose from a stock few, and I hate them all.
I’ve uploaded some short text tones via iTunes into my phone, but they can only be used as ringtones - that is, they’re only available when I change a contact’s ringtone, not the text tone.
Is there any way to add the files or change them to something that my phone will accept (they’re in that m4 format now)?

My phone isn’t jailbroken, and I’d like to keep it that way if possible. Not worth the hassle.

There’s a free app by Blackout Labs called “Ringtone Designer” that allows you to convert MP3 files into an iPhone compatible ringtone. You do it on the phone, export the result to iTunes, then reimport. It’s a bit of a pain but it works and they give you full instructions.

This MP3 is then available as a text tone from the choice of tones available in the menu for your contact.

Alright, I’ll try that tonight…you sure it’s a text tone and not just a ringtone? I’ve converted mp3s into custom ringtones, but they don’t show up when I edit a contact to add a custome text tone.

I’m very sorry, I clicked the wrong option on the contact while I was testing it. I was wrong and I have misled you.

This video claims to show you how to do it, however.

The new version of the OS will allow you to do that, apparently.

This is one of the reasons I hate my iPhone. Jailbreaking? Using a third-party hacking app? What a lot of work just so I can hear the Knights who say Ni when I get a text message. On my 4 year old Samsung all I had to do was hook it up to my PC, drag it into the “sounds” folder, set the new sound as the text tone, it took all of 5 minutes.
