iPod Auto Update (Podcasts)

I have had my iPod for about a month now and a few weeks ago I got hooked on the idea of Podcasting. I have several subscriptions and love that my iPod will automatically update when a new one comes out. Only problem is a podcast is not a song. I listen to it once and the chances of me listening to it again on my iPod are not very high. This does not mean I want to delete it permanently from my computer or iTunes, just from the iPod. How do I do this? For that matter how do I do it with songs. I want to be able to play them from the iTunes library but don’t really need them on my iPod. I have no idea how to do this! Thanks in advace!

Disable the auto update function. iTunes will still automatically download your podcasts, but nothing will transfer to your iPod unless you do it yourself.

How do i then tell it to transfer only certain songs? Is that what the little check box is for?

  1. Plug in your iPod.
  2. Drag songs from your Library to the iPod icon on the left.

hrm… I haven’t tried this… but with some creative use of the smart-playlists this may just be possible.

set up a smart playlist
for

Playcount IS 0
Genre IS Podcast
Use autoupdate on this playlist and remove podcast auto updating from the options menu.

This should input all songs that are podcasts and have not played.(I believe Itunes/ipod only counts the completion of a song/podcast as a play)

When you listen to a podcast on your ipod or your computer it should automatically remove the podcast from the playlist and thus the ipod when you connect it.

again, I just thought this up and i’m too lazy to do it myself.
