I have about 10 minutes on the bus on my way to the office, and I’m getting a little tired of sudoku. I’d like to play some blackjack, so I downloaded a free app. Unfortunately, it requires an Internet connection.
Can anyone recommend a blackjack app for an iPod Touch that does not require a connection and can be played anywhere?
Sorry, no helpful info here. Just wanted to say that I have a friend that was so bad at poker that we named a hand after him, aka a “three card straight”, aka bupkiss.
He would so confidently and boldly lay down his cards, showing three straight, no certain that he won the hand but believing it was at least possible. We would have to inform him that he had nothing. A few hands later he would lay out the same thing and have to be reminded that it was nothing. Needless to say, we drink when we play.
Anyway. On the road with his band, months at a time, he’s looking for something to stave off boredom, so he gets poker for his iPhone.
We now fear him on poker night. He’s at least as good as the best of us.
I can’t vouch for any blackjack apps, but I’ve been enjoying Dogs Playing Poker, a Texas Hold 'Em game with amusing settings. It isn’t free, but I think it’s worth the two bucks.
My favorite touch is that one of the players, for no apparent reason, is not a dog but a walrus.
21 Pro seems to get good reviews. I haven’t tried it, so I can’t really vouch for it personally.
If you’re going to get a blackjack program, here are the things I’d look for:
Configurable rules that match the rules available from real games (dealer hits soft 17, number of decks, blackjack payout, etc).
It should use actual shuffled decks, and not just spit cards out randomly. In other words, if you play a four-deck game, the computer should use a random number generator to shuffle 208 cards, then deal them until it gets to the cut line, then shuffle them all again.
It should simulate other players at the game, instead of just heads-up.
Blackjack’s strength and complexity comes from the fact that the strategy changes as the cards are dealt. If the cards are shuffled and dealt after every hand, the game loses its charm.
A game that has the features above can be used to learn card counting, and can be used to prove out your card counting techniques. You can actually beat the game, and the fun comes in trying to build a bankroll. A game that shuffles after every hand cannot be beaten, and you’ll just cycle through an endless series of bankrolls that slowly deplete to zero.
The game I linked to appears to have the features I mentioned.
I bought the app, but it won’t load onto my iPod. It does say that it’s compatible with the Touch. I’m running version 2.2.1 OS on the Touch. iTunes says there’s a newer version (4.0) available. But when I click Update it says The version of iTunes 9.1.1 is the current version.
Version 9.1.1 is the **iTunes **software. My I Pod touch is running 3.1.1 and the 21 game needs at at least a version 3.
The touch should update during sync. If not you may have to update itunes also
That’s the thing. The Update button is next to where it says to click the Update button to upgrade to version 4. But when I click the button, it comes up with the iTunes 9.1.1 message.
It is version 9.1.1. When I try to update the iPod software it tells me that I’m already using iTunes 9.1.1. Only I’m trying to update the iPod software. It’s like I ride my motorcycle to McDonalds and they say ‘Would you like to supersize that?’ I say, ‘Yes, please.’ And they say, ‘You did ride your motorcycle here.’
