iPod Touch car charger

I wanted to listen to my iPod Touch in the car one day, so I plugged in the car charger that I used with my old iPod (not-a-Touch). A message was displayed that said the Touch could not be charged that way. Not a problem, as it was only a two-hour trip.

But I occasionally make eight-hour (or more) drives. Is there a car-charger that works with the Touch?

Go to monoprice.com and search for ipod and get a few chargers for $1-3. I bought several for my iPhone but found this didn’t word very well. However, this lighter adapter and this cord do work well together.

That’s just my experience, and it was with an iPhone. I think some chargers I got actually said iPod, which may have been the problem.

Aha! I had thought that if they made a lighter adapter that had a USB socket it should work. Didn’t think to look for it though.

Thanks.

Hm. One review said it works with the Touch. Two said it doesn’t.

If you already have an adapter with a USB port, you can get this adapter cable from Boxwave for $8- Boxwave.

Apparently the Touch/Iphone uses a pin-out that is a little different from the standard USB ports. When looking for a charger, make sure it says it works with the latest generations of ipod/iphone.

It’s a USB/FireWire issue. FireWire provides 12VDC power, while USB provides 5VDC. The first iPods were FireWire only devices. Then Apple added USB support at the same time they added the dock connector. iPods made during this time could charge using the FireWire 12 volts or the USB 5 volts, and most manufacturers of car chargers naturally chose 12 volts. FireWire became less and less commonly used by iPod consumers, and Apple finally discontinued FireWire support with the second generation iPod Touch and iPhone. Newer chargers will specify that they are compatible with 2nd gen Touches. If the product description doesn’t mention it, I’d guess it’s the older type - unless it’s also a USB power supply that lets you use your iPod dock cable.

Same issue with my modern iPods. My iPod2Car adaptor doesn’t charge (but still plays fine). I bought a generic charger from the local variety store, and a 3.5" to 3.5" mini jack (company car doesn’t have my adaptor, but I should be getting a Sync car pretty soon).

We have an adapter that always displays that message when my husband plugs in his iPhone, but after it goes away it charges like normal and does no damage.

:::shrug:::

Yes. I have one. If you want I can run out to the car and get brand/model etc.

Edit - it is really an small FM transmitter so I can listen to the Touch over the radio…but it also recharges.

That message means the charger is not shielded to prevent interference from the cell phone portion of the iPod, it also might not be able to keep the iphone charged if you are using lots of power - like running GPS, bluetooth and leaving the screen on.

Otherwise SuperNelson nailed it.

I use one of these with my iPhone 3G and it works fine.
