What ipods can I charge with my 2nd Gen Nano interface ?

In my car I have a ipod interface that connects to the rear of the stereo and comes out in the glove box. It works fine with my old 2nd generation Ipod Nano, but not with a 4th generation nano I’ve tried to use it with (the USB connection works fine but it refuses to charge). This is of course because Apple are dicks, and decided to squeeze their customers for a few cents in licensing fees from charger manufactures (IIRC devices detect a series of resistors in the USB power input and will refuse to charge if they are incorrect).

What I need to know is which devices will work on an interface that is known to work on a 2nd Gen Ipod Nano. Specifically will a 3rd Gen Ipod Nano work, or do I have to get a 2nd Gen one ? Is there a table of this information somewhere, so far my googling has failed to come up with one.

It is not about licensing fees, but rather removing redundant hardware from the iPods. Apple dropped Firewire charging support from the 4th gen iPod Nano, which means that any chargers that provide power through the Firewire pin on the dock connector (including your car, apparently) cannot charge it.

You need to buy something like this, that connects the Firewire power pin on your charger to the USB power pin on the iPod.

You could try the forums over there. If you search for firewire compatible ipods you might have better luck. Or you could just get an adapter like Absolute mentioned
