My iPod Touch shows up in iTunes just fine, and syncs and updates.
Typo Knig’s, however, has decided not to do this: it shows up, but there is nothing in the big window (we can’t set up playlists or anything, iTunes won’t let us sync…) and google-fu is failing me.
As we’re about to leave on vacation, it’d SURE be nice to have this fixed.
I know it’s got to be something as simple as a messed-up setting but I have no clue what that might be. Sigh.
We’ve tried rebooting the computer and that didn’t help.
Dumb thing to check:
If you’re plugging in the two different iPod Touches on two different USB ports, try using the one that’s known good.
One other idea:
Rebooting the computer was a good thought – did you also try restarting the iPod Touch? In case you don’t know how (most people don’t turn theirs off all that often, but it can really help with stability, response time and just weird stuff like this), assuming it’s like the phone, hold down the screen lock button for a while, and a screen will come up with a sliding switch to turn the thing off. Wait a second until it turns off completely (sometimes there’s a spinner as it shuts down), then hold down the home button until it turns back on.
Other than those two things, sometimes I just have to plug mine in a couple times until iTunes recognizes it.
I’ve had this problem a couple of times. The solution is to restore/reset it to factory settings. This will wipe your disc, and your music will be reloaded when it synchs. I posted instructions (as I remembered them) in a thread like a year ago, but I can’t find it now. I’ve bookmarked the Apple Forums discussion where I got the instructions, but I’m working at the office today and won’t be back to my PowerBook until tonight. If you don’t find the instructions, or if nobody else posts them, I’ll find them tonight.
EDIT: Nevermind!
