ITunes doesn't recognize my IPod anymore

I plug it in and nothing happens. Oh, it charges, all right. It just doesn’t show up in my ITunes anymore. I cannot add or edit anything.

I have downloaded the latest ITunes and I have restarted the computer with no relief.

Any suggestions?

The first thing to try is a hard reset. Depending on the type of iPod; with a Touch or iphone hold the top button and home button simultaneously until a power-off slider appears. For most of the others I think you hold the center button and top or bottom button on the scroll wheel until the Apple logo appears.

If the hard reset doesn’t fix the problem, forcing your iPod into disk mode might do the trick. Instructions here.

This happened to me, and it was a problem with the Windows service that recognizes the iPod when you connect it. Once I got the service running again, it was fine.

Here’s from Apple’s support site on getting it working with iPod Touch. This bit toward the end about “Verify iPod touch Driver/Service Installation” is probably pretty generic for different iPod types (e.g. the service name might be slightly different).

I also sometimes have a problem with two user profiles running on the same computer. If one profile starts first, I sometimes can’t get iTunes to recognize the iPod from the second profile. I resolve by stopping the service, then starting it manually from the second profile.

I had this problem with my daughter’s Nano. I tried everything on the iTunes website with no luck. Then on a lark I tried a different USB port (still didn’t work), then updated the driver for it. Somehow that did the trick.

I hate iTunes.

Sorry, kinda OT, but anyone who hates itunes (like I did) can manage their ipods through winamp. It only takes a bit of config and then you’re free for life!

That did it. Thanks.
