They view dog ownership as a “Western” custom. (To Muslims dogs are unclean, meaning that if you wash your hands and face for prayers (which Muslims do) and happen to touch one, you have to wash up again before you pray.) Dog owners would be fined and their dogs would be confiscated. What the authorities would do with the dog is unspecified. (The puppies, at least, presumably would fed into wood chippers.)

So far, this is a proposed law. And it looks like you can still have a dog if you keep it in your house and yard or outside city limits. I’m not sure how upset to get over proposed legislation. Actually, my Dad was a germophobe, so what I’m mostly feeling is a weird nostalgia. A whole country of . . . my Dad - tense and ready to scream if a pet hair gets on a towel.
And am I the only one who read it as Iranian lawnmakers want to ban dogs? 'Cause a lot of people with lawns have trouble with other people’s dogs. Although I can imagine that the next proposed law will ban lawns as Western.

But oddly enough ( or not ), Muslim Turkey has their own national breed of dog. One I wouldn’t try fucking if my life depended on it ( and if I tried, it probably would - they’re big and not exactly the sweetest critters on the planet ).
