Iron Man 3 Trailer: boner status elevated

Okay, nifty special effects and all, but I’d prefer that the trailer provide more insight as to the Mandarin’s plot and motivations. I hate superhero stories in which the villain’s primary/sole motivation is to attack/antagonize the hero. It’s just cheap, lazy storytelling. Where’s the threat that the hero is needed for in the first place? If his sole reason for being is to wait for heretofore unknown enemies to blow up his house and kidnap his girlfriend, why not just hang up the armor?

Why do you think Stark would create the Hulkbuster armor in the movie-verse. In the comics, IIRC, it was paranoia. In the movies, Stark spends the whole time selling Banner on how great the Hulk is, so clearly it’s not built out if the same paranoia as the comics as Hulk proved out just as Stark expected. So is it envy?

Have you seen the first movie? Stark knows that not being Iron Man isn’t enough to stop him getting targeted by terrorists, because that’s the entire reason he became Iron Man in the first place.

Maybe Banner asked him to make it.

When The Avengers first came out, the general consensus through SDMB-wanking was that if Banner controls his Hulk-out then he has some manner of control over Hulk but when Banner does not control his Hulk-out he then has no control over Hulk.

Heck, given the movie, that might have been their first project together. “Just in case.”

It might also be just a sort of general-purpose paranoia. “There are some very powerful dudes out there, and I might have to fight some of them someday. I want an armor that’s up to the job. To make sure it’s good enough, I’ll make it strong enough to beat the most powerful being I know of.”

I mean, it’s not like the Hulkbuster armor is useful only for fighting the Hulk.

Well, not yet anyway (maybe in Avengers 2). There’s a reason that the camera focused on the “A” in the destroyed Stark Tower as the only letter left–and fans with sharper eyes than I noticed that in Tony’s rebuilding plans, there were areas marked off for different members of the team and a quinjet bay.

… so in other words, exactly what they were suspicious of Fury doing?

I kinda thought it would have come out of the conversation that Stark has with General Ross at the end of the last Hulk movie

That scene was explained (possibly retconned) in one of the Marvel short films included as a DVD extra.

The Council that Fury has to answer to, they were insisting that The Abomination (he hates being called that) Emil Blonsky should be included as part of the Avengers team. They are impressed with his war record and they are inclined to believe that the destruction of most of Harlem was Banner’s fault and that Blonsky should be credited for bringing the Hulk down.

Fury knows better and absolutely does not want Blonsky on the team.
Blonsky is being held by General Ross (who must have his own version of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Hulk prison cell). Fury doesn’t want Blonksy but the Council insists that he approach Ross and ask him to release Blonksy to S.H.I.E.L.D. for the Avengers Initiative.

Fury tasks Agent Coulson with coming up with a way to ask General Ross in such a way that will anger and offend him so that Ross will refuse the request. So, Fury will have fulfilled his duty to the Council by attempting to draft Blonsky but Fury still keeps Blonsky off the team. Fury can excuse himself to the Council that it was Ross’ refusal that kept Blonsky off the team.

Coulson and Sitwell are discussing the situation: how to make the request in such a way that will so anger and offend Ross that he is sure to refuse. I think it was Sitwell who came up with the idea to send “The Consultant”. So, Stark goes to General Ross for the purpose of explaining The Avengers and to request the release of Blonsky to participate in the team.

When next Coulson and Sitwell meet, Coulson explains that it was a success. He explains that Stark completely pissed off General Ross and General Ross refused to release Blonsky.

Incidentally, the entire short film lasts only about half as long as it took me to type all this out.
