Irrational Hatred

The Pittsburgh Steelers. Never liked them my entire life. I respect the hell out of them (how can you not respect the Rooney family?) but I’ve just never liked them. The KC Chiefs and Miami Dolphins to a lesser extent.

The Denver Broncos. Maybe not completely irrational because they did defeat my Packers in the super bowl, but that was 15 years ago. I should’ve gotten over it by now, but I haven’t.

Inversion: I used to hate the Pittsburgh Pirates in the early-mid 90s, but strangely enough, now that the Pirates and Brewers are divisional rivals, I see them as friendly rivals, and I’d like nothing better than to see the Pirates win the division title over the gd Cardinals this year.

The Montreal Canadiens. Maybe because I never got exactly what the “CHC” or whatever the hell their logo is supposed to be when I was a kid. Maybe because I really wanted Wayne Gretzky to win the Cup with the Kings back in '93 and MTL got in the way. Maybe because of the French Canadian thing (I’m shallow, I’m not proud of it).

And not a sports player/team case per se, but the NBA on NBC theme. Kind of rationalized because that was during Jordan’s prime and the Bucks’ low point, but it’s still a theme song. By all accounts, a pretty good theme song, it just fits the pace and the attitude of the sport, and it will be on everyone’s top five sports theme lists until the end of time. Whenever I hear it or even think of it, though, it just reminds me that I’ve only had maybe two seasons of decent pro hoops to cheer for up here since I was in junior high.

And (me being shallow again, sorry) Brazilian soccer teams and players. What the hell is up with the one-name thing???

The Philadelphia Flyers. I shouldn’t care that much about them, I’m a Blackhawks fan, but I just can’t stand them!

Not a team but a driver, Sebastian Vettel. Guy never loses, never blows a tire, never gets punted off the track by a disgruntled soon-to-be-ex-teammate. Drives me nuts.

Though I’m a New Yorker, the Rangers were never my favorite hockey team- I liked the Canadiens, especially Ken Dryden (when you’re a nerdy intellectual kid, it’s nice to have a nerdy, intellectual sports hero).
