Irrational Hatred

Which teams or players do you irrationally hate? Teams that aren’t your rivals, and haven’t necessarily done anything wrong, but you just root against anyway.

There’s a few that I root against for tenuous reasons (I can’t stand Boise State because of their blue field and the fact that Kirk Herbstriet won’t shut up about them), but there are other teams that I root against and I have no idea why. Why have I always hated the NY Jets? I haven’t a clue. I also don’t like the Bengals and have no clue why. I’m a Falcons fan, I shouldn’t care about either of them.

What are the teams or players in any sport that you irrationally hate?

Crap, this was supposed to be in The Game Room. I have asked the mods to move it.

Let me get that for you.

The Dallas Cowboys. I’ve hated them for years, mostly because I had to spend most of my youth hearing them referred to as “America’s Team.” WTF?

I’m on board on the Jets hate. I also love when the Toronto Maple Leafs lose.

That’s funny to me. I used to hate them when I was in high school for the reasons you just mentioned. Then I went to college and was in ROTC. Our Captain was a huge Cowboys fan, and if they won on Sunday we didn’t have to get up at 0500 for PT on Monday. That’ll make you a fan real quick.

I don’t see anything irrational about that. Hating a team because it has the arrogance and audacity to proclaim itself “America’s Team” makes perfect sense. Irrational would be hating a team like the San Diego Chargers.

I feel the same about the Packers. Back in the 1990s some dude on the Packers said they were now America’s Team. Fuck you, Packers!

Washington Native Americans, LA Lakers and The Ohio State.

I’m surprised it took 5 posts.

I really don’t think I hate any sports team; that’s too strong a word really. I mean it’s just a game fercryinoutloud.

I used to really not like the Montreal Canadiens, but that was probably more due to jealousy when they were an almost unbeatable franchise. Now that they’re a middle-of-the-road team fighting for playoff spots like everyone else I’ve come to accept them.

I like it when the Ottawa Senators lose though.

Irrationally hate? No…

The Ravens - because the culture of that team is despicable. The on-field antics are deplorable. If I met one of them in real life, I would not enjoy myself.

I guess I irrationally hate the Phillies - because baseball is terminally boring and the Phillies aren’t good enough consistently enough to overcome the boring nature of the game. Yet my family loves them. And so, I hate them, for being loved undeservingly.

If a team has a large and avid fanbase and wins most of the time, chances are pretty good that I hate it.

I hate Lebron James. Its not irrational, its perfectly reasonable to hate that guy

I have an irrational hatred towards some professional cyclists. I don’t know why. The never did me any harm. I just think they’re not as good as the hype, which is not entirely their fault. Cadel Evans is one of them. That chav Braddley Wiggins is another. Thomas Voeckler is a third. And it’s always fun to see Alberto Contador get dropped on a mountain climb.

Any Toronto team should always loose all the time.

Any hockey team that resides in a climate where ice cannot form outside as a normal environmental by-product of winter has no business participating in the game.

I don’t give a damn about football as a whole, but “Redskins”? Nobody could think of a better name?

…and Bode Miller. That guy is just a hack.

My hatred of the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees is entirely rational. My animosity towards the University of Spoiled Children is a reflection of my enrollment at the Universal College of Lowered Aspirations. I have no irrational hatreds. They are all carefully thought out and nourished.

I’m not nearly as passionate a sports fan as I once was, but in my day, I loathed all kinds of people and teams for no good reason. Among them:

Carlton Fisk (NOT just because I was a Yankee fan hand he was with the Red Sox- I never hated Yastrzemski or Luis Tiant or Fred Lynn… but I despised Fisk, even though he’s probably a perfectly decent guy)

Tom Seaver (probably because the Mets owned New York in the late 60s and early 70s, when I first started watching baseball. He may have been the best pitcher I saw play regularly, but I never would have admitted that while he was playing).

The Boston Bruins, all of them. What Ken Hodge or Wayne Cashman or Gerry Cheevers ever did to make me hate them so is a mystery).

The Washington Redskins. Something about George Allen irritated me no end.

The Los Angeles Rams. I just couldn’t stand Roman Gabriel. No sane reason for that.

Real Madrid. They spend ludicrously on transfer fees to the detriment of football (E100 million for Gareth Bale, are you kidding me?), have an over-inflated sense of their own importance and awesomeness, are run by d-bag Florentino Perez, and most of their US fans are bandwagon-jumping idiots who want Cristiano Ronaldo jerseys because they haven’t heard of anybody else. About their only player I can stand is Iker Casillas, largely because I feel automatic sympathy for anybody on the bad side of Jose Mourinho.

Any team coached by Phil Jackson.
The Evil Empire

The Cleveland Indians, because of their stupid and offensive logo.

The NY Yankees, for obvious and near universally-held reasons.
