Is a program for those Flash-looking pop-ups available?

I run two pop-up blockers (Google Toolbar and Pop-Up Stopper), and these programs work perfectly for IE pop-ups.

However, I will sometimes get a rather keen looking Flash animation that usually advertises something entertainment oriented. They often have sound, and they completely obscure the page. The ‘close’ box is often hard to locate.

Is there a program (or, better yet, a setting I could toggle) to avert these with?

You can do it with Mozilla.

(I know, I know, you didn’t ask. )

Well, I use Mozilla instead of IE, and it seems to successfully block the popups you describe (since I never see anything like you describe). Dunno if you want to do the somewhat drastic step of changing browsers, though.

These are not popups, rather they’re Dynamic HTML (DHTML) objects. They can only be blocked by filtering out or disabling DHTML, and I know of no programs or settings that can do that. I’m afraid my only suggestion is the previously mentioned “use Mozilla.”

Is Mozilla intelligently blocking them, or it actually a bug in Mozilla that it doesn’t render DHTML objects?

AFAIK, the objects are made to be compatible only with IE.

That’s a great feature of IE.

By the way, with Mozilla Firebird, there’s a simple add-on (extension) that makes flash animations not display. There’s just an empty rectangle that says “Flash click to play.” If I wanted to actually see the Flash for some reason, I’d just click in the rectangle.

Thanks for the insight; it turns out that I have Mozilla as an alternate browser. I may well begin reconsidering the pecking order.

Thanks again!

I’ve been using Netscape 7.1 based on Mozilla. No more popups and nice cookie handling too.

Opera shows them, but the ironic thing about it is that they usually show up all screwed up so I have to switch to IE to view that page just so I can close it (these usually have an X hidden on them somewhere.)
