Panache’s thread about Five guys reminded me - is American ketchup sweeter than Canadian ketchup?
We had a Five Guys open here a while ago, so the Pipers went there one night for burgers. The burgers and chips were fine, except they were sweet. Took me a while to realise that it was the ketchup that was too sweet.
Is that a Five Guys thing or is US ketchup generally sweeter than Canadian?
While I’ve noticed many foods seem sweeter in the US, ketchup seems about the same to me. Heinz, anyway - it’s the only one I buy. If there’s a difference, it’s probably subtle enough that I’d need to try them side-by-side and compare them to detect it.
I’ve always heard that the old McDonald’s french fries had sugar in them, to help with the browning and with the flavor. Are you sure it wasn’t the fries that were too sweet?
I can believe that ketchup that’s marketed to US residents has more sugar (from whatever source) than ketchup marketed in Canada, though. It seems like we’ve got sugar in everything here.
As an aside, did you hear about what happened when the Five Guys was under construction? Some guys hit up the Lowe’s across the street and spray painted under the sign so it said “Five Guys One Cup”. I wish I could have seen it in person…
