Is American ketchup sweeter than Canadian ketchup?

Panache’s thread about Five guys reminded me - is American ketchup sweeter than Canadian ketchup?

We had a Five Guys open here a while ago, so the Pipers went there one night for burgers. The burgers and chips were fine, except they were sweet. Took me a while to realise that it was the ketchup that was too sweet.

Is that a Five Guys thing or is US ketchup generally sweeter than Canadian?

I’ve never had Camadian ketchup.

Camadian ketchup is extremely sour.

Weirdly, some people in this Chowhound thread think that Heinz ketchup is sweeter in Canada. My guess is that there’s no difference.

Heinz maintains that its ketchup is sweeter in Canada.

Possibly. Never been to Canada. But anything besides Whataburger ketchup seems awfully sweet, much more than ketchup really ought to be. I think.

While I’ve noticed many foods seem sweeter in the US, ketchup seems about the same to me. Heinz, anyway - it’s the only one I buy. If there’s a difference, it’s probably subtle enough that I’d need to try them side-by-side and compare them to detect it.

There’s a restaurant in town called The District that has ketchup that I could eat like a soup.

That’s not really pertinent to this thread, but I really do like their ketchup.

I’ve always heard that the old McDonald’s french fries had sugar in them, to help with the browning and with the flavor. Are you sure it wasn’t the fries that were too sweet?

I can believe that ketchup that’s marketed to US residents has more sugar (from whatever source) than ketchup marketed in Canada, though. It seems like we’ve got sugar in everything here.

It’s what I came in to post. I live near Canada and can confirm it is sweeter in Canada than US.

Assuming the Five Guys you’re talking about is in Canada, how do you know that the ketchup they use is from the US?

As an aside, did you hear about what happened when the Five Guys was under construction? Some guys hit up the Lowe’s across the street and spray painted under the sign so it said “Five Guys One Cup”. I wish I could have seen it in person…
