Whoa, you go away and watch a film, come back everyones getting them.
To add to your data points already, my address here has never been public and I only use it for this message board. But even stranger I’ve not got anymore e-mails since my second post in this thread. It’s possible that my mailserver killed them 'cos it noticed the amount of e-mails from one address or maybe it’s something else. I didn’t do anything (i.e. try to unsubscribe etc).
I’m registered on a few other boards (snopes, randi etc) with different addresses and I’ve not got anything similar on those addresses.
I can’t add anything else that hasn’t been posted. It sure is pretty weird. I guess we’ll see what happens next.
I got 'em too. About 35 of them, I think. But they’ve stopped, at about the same time as everyone else’s. Yes, I did register on the temp board, and my email addy has always been public.
FWIW, DAVEW0071 was getting them too. I was IMing with him this afternoon, and we discussed it.
If it helps any, I didn’t get any of these emails, but I also changed my address in approximately Jan/Feb. If the harvest was done back then, they would be mailing my old address which is no longer in service. I have joined both temp board and the Australian board.
I dare say it’s a coincidence, but there’s a thread in MPSIMS about leaving anonymous messages on the anonymous message board, and the one I got last night (and other people got too) was a threat to spam this message board.
So far, I have not received any. My SDMB e-mail addy has never been public at the regular SDMB; I believe it was public for about 10 minutes after I registered at the BBoy TSDMB, before I realized it and hid it.
I can’t think of any common link apart from our membership of this board. It doesn’t seem to be demographic stuff. It doesn’t seem to be our post counts or having tangled with a particular person on the SDMB. I’ve certainly never subscribed to the newsletter or visited the site, and I only received a handful of the emails that others have received.
I haven’t been near the anonymous messages thread.
And like Tuba, I can’t see someone going to the trouble of clicking on our profiles to compile a list of our addies.
Is there any possibility that a list of email addies was ripped when the SDMB got hacked and is being SOLD? Because if that’s happened, this is going to be an ongoing problem.
Just as a matter of interest, I spoke with someone who received the crap, too, and she’s never heard of the SDMB. (Hard to believe, I know. I enlightened her. )
I wondered why my spam folder suddenly had 15 more messages in it. They were diverted to junk mail and the remaining messages were blocked altogether. I did a quick search through the normal sources but the newsletter and host have not been reported as spam sources before. I figured someone was having fun with a poorly coded listserv, so I junked them. Count me in the list of those “affected”.
By the way, there’s another thread on this over here.
FWIW, I just counted them, and I have received 64 spam e-mails (including the “please remove me” responses) at my e-mail address. I have NEVER received spam at this address before, and don’t hand it out to anyone, bar the people at SDMB (and G’Dope) and then I don’t type it out as a link. I don’t think I used it at the temp board, but am not 100% sure.
Another data point… it’s damn annoying. A test went wrong ? Yeah, right.
And what’s even funnier is that since I posted to this thread the only notification that I get from the SDMB is when someone posts to this thread and not to any of the others I’ve posted to.
I only have one mail on Hotmail - I received three messages within a couple of minutes, and I blocked them. No big deal.
Someone could have harvested the names by delving into threads, or they could run the “look up e-mail” scripts and get them faster that way. It’s one reason I forbid viewing e-mails and profiles on my Board for non-registered Members.
Just to play safe, I upgraded my virus shield, then ran it. I had not done that in way too long. There was only 1 file infected. I don’t remember its name, but the virus name came out to be “JS?Seeker.gen.a.” My ISP thought it to be the “klez” virus, a popular one these days.
I do hope it was just good fun. I also hope to beat the shit out of whoever did it.
I got hit too. I ended up just blocking all email to that name for now. Is there a better solution? I know I didn’t subscribe to anything and I’ve had this screen name for years.
I got about 10 from badrats@badrat.com saying I was using their email address, about 3 replies saying “I don’t know what you’re talking about”, and perhaps another 3 autoresponders saying they were on vacation or whatnot. I threw them all out and after that, nothing. I did not send any unsubscribe messages either or block any addresses. I don’t recall if there were any attachments, but if there were I didn’t open them.
These were all on my public email address and I was on the temp board.
I’ve been getting spam like that too, and I don’t even post much!
So far I’ve received 21 messages related to Raraavis or Badrat. 13 of those are the “You’re using my old e-mail address” message, and they all came from 2:12 PM to 2:34 PM Central time. The other ones were replies, and there was also a message saying I was an “opt-in subscriber” of Raraavis, whatever that means.
I wasn’t registered on the temp board, but I was on the SDMB before the crash.
