Is anyone getting weird mail at their SDMB e-mail ?

I changed my (publically available) email address at the SDMB from xxxxxx@k.st to xxxxxxx@xxxx.com.au a short time back (about two or three weeks ago, IIRC), and I’ve received sixteen of these emails at the old address. So the emails weren’t harvested within the last couple of weeks.

Tuba, would you have any sort of record of the exact date I changed my address? It would allow us to narrow down the time frame when this happened.

If it helps any, I changed the e-mail address I’ve got posted here about a week ago and I’ve not received any of the spam at my new address, but I’ve gotten a bunch at my old e-mail address.

FWIW, I use either pine or Eudora - they came in my Eudora box this a.m. because I was at home.

None have shown up in my pine box.

I got all the badrats emails, but NOTHING about a newsletter or anything like that.

OK. A big request here. When this first started, I fired off emails to Steve Richards and also to badrats.

I’ve posted Steve Richards’ response in which he accepts responsibility (although without explaining how the hell he got our addies).

I’ve just had an email from the guy who operates badrats asking if I know how the hell HIS address got on the mailing list and how to get it removed.

I’ve given him a link to this thread, so he can check out what we’ve already established, but this guys sounds on the level about being just as much a “victim” here as we are, so sending him more emails of complaint is serving no purpose.

I’m happy to forward his email to the admins, but don’t think it’s appropriate to post it in full here.
BTW, TLD I’ve posted an announcement on G’Dope linking to here - hope you don’t mind.

I use a different e-mail address for G’Dope. The one that is getting spammed is used only for SDMB, and is not hidden. It may have been used on the temp board, but I have no idea if it was hidden or not.

Another “me-too” post. Incidentally, though…I know that this address has only been used on the SDMB. I created it specifically for this use back in October, I think.

Don’t know if this helps.

I received 38 of these message to an email addy I’ve only used here at SDMB.

First my cat vomits on my new HP Laser Printer, now this!

sigh

I got 30 emails. But it’s strange, many emails didn’t even list my email address. I use the free email at fathom as an address and don’t use Outlook with it Here’s one of them. Some were requests to stop sending the mail.

I obscured the address of the sender. And the unsubscribe email I sent out came back as undeliverable.

Any ideas on this???

I got the first email (with the black background) around noon. I clicked the unsubscribe link to send an unsub email. I got 3 more emils (including the “badrats” one) and also my unsub confirmation, to which i replied, and haven’t had any more emails since.

One thing I did notice was that the images in the newsletter were working this afternoon, and they’re not working now. The images point to:

http://www.raraavisband.com/email/*.jpg

(where * is a number)

So www.raraavisband.com was working earlier, and it’s not working now. Perhaps the whole www.raraavisband.com site got hacked and used to send out these mails.

Also, I’ve gotten a couple of virus notices when checking email, something about a Exploit-MIME virus. Not sure if they’re related to this at all, since McAffee deletes them right away. It might be smart for some of you Dopers without virus scanners to think about getting one…

I got a ton of the messages and just added a filter to delete at the server (Outlook Express). I had no idea it was related to the SDMB. If anyone wants to know how to set up filters, just ask and I or someone will explain. I wouldn’t unsubscribe because that just creates another mailstorm and confirms a valid address.

I also got a bunch of emails (it seemed like the same one just repeated) from that rara avis. I just deleted them as a matter of course like I do with all spam. No further problems.

DarkJudicator just checked his email - he’s been hit too. He has the orginal ones I received, plus a few more. The newsletter plus 15 (all the listservs went to his junkmail).

More data:
I got the emails.
I had signed up at the temp boards.
I changed my SDMB address during the last week of March.
The emails had gone to my old address, which is probably also the one I used at the temp boards.
I got an “undeliverable mail” message when I tried to unsubscribe, but haven’t gotten anything else since anyway.

Another victim checking in… I have just been blocking sender. I thought they might have been from a Yahoo group I run, but now I see that is prbly not the case. Gah!
I think I have gotten about 25 or so of the badrat ones and all the same response ones you all have gotten. Gods, how annoying.

I have not received any at my registered email address. However, after reading TheLoadedDog and dwyr’s posts this may be because I had to change my address a few months back as my old provider dropped free accounts.

Well, looky what just turned up in my inbox:

So I’d say that the “experimenters” just found out what spamming does.

You rock Lynn.

Let’s hope whoever harvested the addresses hasn’t spread them around too far and wide - people in the other threads are talking about the same pattern for ink-jet printers and cameras…

I posted this in GQ by mistake:

I second the ‘you rock Lynn’.

I put a thanks in the Pit thread as well, but this warrants two responses. Thanks to Lynn Bodoni for a job well done  .

  • Tamerlane

Thank you, Lynn. Great stuff.

This is what happens when you take on the SDMB:
the hackers got us an upgrade, and the spammers lost their account.
