Is eating an apple really the equivalent of brushing your teeth?

Think my 6th grade teacher told us this one, but I’d forgotten about it until recently. Dat really true?

Well, I am neither dentist or nutritionist, but I always heard that Coke was actually better for your teeth than an apple. The reason is that there’s starches in the apple that actually bond the sugar to your teeth, while the sugar in a Coke could be broken down by your saliva. I could be hopelessly wrong, but that’s what one of my teachers told me. OF course, we’re just talking about teeth here - obviously the question of which is better for your health overall is different.

Right- I should’ve said purely on a teeth-cleaning level.

Coke better than an apple? Crikey, I wouldn’t have guessed that.

I’m not a dentist, but I spoke to a dentist friend a few years ago and he said that sugary drinks like Coke are the worst thing for your teeth. Actually, the longer the sugar stays in your mouth, the worse it is, so chewing gum and caramels are the also pretty bad. Coke is sticky so it does stick to the teeth and stays in your mouth longer than you’d think. He also told me that unprocessed foods like apples do not cause cavities, so maybe eating an apple does help.

Last, but not least: flossing is the most important thing.

NO, neither apple nor coke is any good for your teeth.

your teeth need an alaline or at least neutral PH for strength. apples are quite acidic, i am not sure about cola, but it probably is too. furthermore both have sugars, which when used by bacteria in the mouth end up contributing more acid.

acid basically DISSOLVES your teeth. some aboriginal peoples have used a lemon to soften their teeth then hold some tar in their mouth to make their teeth black. black teeth are in style in their culture, not in ours.

BRUSH YOUR DAMN TEETH.

Worst thing in Coke is the phosphoric acid, which is very good at dissolving tooth enamel.

Apples vary. You get some types of apple that have been developed to be very sweet and acidic, because people seem to like sweet apples better. But some apples are actually quite low in sugar by comparison.

No apple is the equivalent of brushing your teeth however. Whoever told you that needs shot, apples are acidic, toothpaste is an alkali.

I seem to remember a poster in my high-school cafeteria that bore the slogan ’ When you can’t brush your teeth chews cheese! ’

So what about cheese? Are raw carrots better than apples?

That’s why all those people who lived before there were processed foods had no cavities, I suppose.

I wasn’t suggesting that I threw my toot brush in da trashcan!

Thanks for the erudite-if-mildly-conflicting responses as always, kids.
