Here’s the faculty turning on each other. Gosh, I have no idea where these students get their crazy notions of respect and tolerance from
Disclaimer: I’m using the video version with rightist social commentary and satire because it’s got captioning. The raw version video, you can’t understand what she’s saying.
The information that I’ve gleaned about Evergreen has come from many videos showing the behavior of the worst of these students, and showing Bridges pathetic pandering demeanor and humiliation in meeting with them; from Bret Weinstein’s interviews (Weinstein himself is clearly a progressive liberal); and from public statements from officials and various groups including academics at the college. The only part the rightwing media has played in this is in hosting videos; and many of the videos are extended continuous takes, not potentially misleading snippets. Unless the videos are fake, the rightwing media have played no part in influencing my own views on events here.
For sure, I will be happy if the regular media give more coverage to the wider behavior of the looney-tunes parts of the radical academic left and its influence on students. More important, I hope that the remaining sane and civilized majority on the liberal left stop ignoring and minimizing what a travesty a significant part (not a tiny minority) of the academic left has become. Identity politics taken to preposterous extremes, “safe spaces” as an excuse to silence anyone they don’t agree with, “de-platforming”, mob intimidation of even other progressive liberals whose views aren’t aligned with the dogmatic progressive party line. It’s an embarrassment when the only people speaking out for what I thought were traditional fundamental liberal values are right-wing trolls.
As I’ve seen others note in other comments section…capitalism will sort it out, assuming they arn’t defunded. Their incoming freshman class will take a hit like Missouri has.
Please don’t think I was responding to you. If you’re treating this fairly–which as near as I can tell means recognizing that the vast majority of Evergreen students weren’t involved in this, and that nobody was forced to leave campus, and that there’s very little evidence anyone was pressured to leave campus–then I’m not talking to you when I talk about the need to recognize nuance. If you’re not one of the people calling for defunding this school, then I’m not addressing you in this case.
If you think there hasn’t been stupid and deceptive rightwing media coverage of this, however, please let me know, so I can point you to the relevant links.
Between that, and the threats of mass murder on campus, definitely what we should be concerned about is a bunch of teenagers acting like assholes, and the pomo profs who won’t punish them.
Assuming I parsed your statement correctly, why wouldn’t the supposedly liberty loving left be out free speeching neo Nazis? Is free speech no longer a liberal ideal? Is bat wielding intimidation and assault the right thing for students to do.
It’s a bit odd that a private joke will get one disinvited to Harvard yet actual intimidation and campus disruption gets capitulation. Weird how academia panders so selectively.
