I can’t figure out, I’ve heard it swing both ways did Fox really cancel Futurama?
It was effectively canceled over a year ago when they chose not to buy any more episodes. Fox had a large backlog of un-aired episodes because they pre-empted the show so often. That’s what they ran all this past season.
Eric
Matt Groening is negotiating other outlets for it; I believe he’s targeted the SciFi Channel.
The SciFi channel?
I’d think Cartoon Network would scoop up any new episodes faster than you could say “Hoo! Ha! Hyuh!”
Johnny Bravo: Indeed. Are any of you here Adult Swim fans? That’s the most reliable way to catch Futurama and Family Guy episodes these days.
Not to mention a lot of other animated worthies.
It comes on Cartoon Network about 10:00PM MDT. Adjust for local time.
Rumor has it that Groening was hoping to do a Futurama movie, but Fox killed that deal. Maybe we’ll get lucky and some bright TV exec will pick the show up.

Wait, better not.

Futurama is rich in ideas and good humour. Together with Red Dwarf it demonstrates that science fiction works very well in a comedy format.
(although RD finally did run out of steam toward the end, Futurama has still got a long way to go)
Glad to see that there is still hope that more will be made…
Tuckerfan, a Futurama movie is still rumored to take place and is more likely than the TV series coming back (according to an interview @ IGN with a Futurama guy).

Yes, eburacum, I would compare Futurama to Red Dwarf, that was a good call!
Bender: I’ll save me!
(By launching a videogame!!!)
[Zoidberg]Ah, if I only had the money![/Zoidberg]
[Zoidberg]And the system to play it on…[/zoidberg]
Why Futurama got cancelled, I’ll never know (well, I do know, it’s cause Fox executives are idiots and put it in a crappy time-slot, and always pre-empted it with football, baseball, worlds <blankies> <blank>, or some stupid movie like Independance Day.)
There is a chance that Cartoon Network will buy new episodes, but the negotiations between them, Fox, and so forth are going to be hard. Fox might not want to air the show, but they sure as Hell want to keep the rights to it. Bastards,
Rumor has it that Fox only greenlighted Futurama because Groening leveraged his ‘Simpsons’ power over them. Consequently Fox treated the show like shit. The didn’t promote it, they rescheduled and pre-empted it constantly, and then basically shelved it in early 2002 for no reason.
If they had just left it as a lead-in or lead-out to The Simpsons it would have done fine. They tried moving King of the Hill to tuesdays and the ratings plummeted. They moved it back to sundays and it bounced right back. I love KOTH too but I think Futurama is (was) better.
I don’t hold much hope for it being renewed on a cable station. In one set of ‘bumpers’ (promos before & after commercials) Cartoon Network said that Futurama cost over 3 meeellion dollars per episode! I doubt either CN or SciFi will risk that on a non-original production.
The majority of that, IIRC, was spent on the CGI elements of the show. I’m sure they could get by without it.
Nope. An awful lot of the show is CGI. All the ships, for example, and even more importantly, Bender is CGI all the time (as I believe all the robots are.)
Incorrect. They’re 2D, including Bender. The only times 3D are used for characters is when they interact in a 3D shot, such as, for example, Bender hanging onto the tailfin of their ship as it flies through space. Or sometimes they do characters in 3D for a particular kind of special effect.
Regardless, I don’t think the show could work as strict 2D – or maybe it could, but it wouldn’t be the same.

arent they going to bring the 3D CGI into the simpsons next season? i heard that somewhere. worked for futurama, simpsons certainly doesnt need it.

Those are my sentimonials exactly.
I do hope that they make new episodes of Futurama. Problem is, if the show is picked up by a cable network, who’s gonna be showing these episodes in Canada?
