BTW, Badtz Maru – don’t expect to win this one. Sometimes, ignorance runs so deep (esp. with these conspiracy-theory types), that they are beyond all hope. Good for shooting practice, though.
I was going to give my own personal example, but I think I’ll open a separate IMHO thread instead, since I’m in a narcissistic mood tonight.
I suggest you take this to one of the (all too many) conspiricy theory boards. Whilst I think GWB is not fit to be my president for a variety of reasons I will not list here, to suggest that he was responsible is one of the most ignorant and cruel statements one could make.
Go away, or at least finish college. This is as silly as the nutcases who claimed ron brown was shot dead, then, hey, let’s crash the plane as well.
60 years later people still claim FDR was responsible for Pearl Harbor, in defiance of all evidence and common sense.
60 years from now they’ll still be saying Bush was responsible for 9/11, in defiance, again, of all evidence and common sense.
This is yet another example of the SNQ, or Static Nutbar Quotient. No matter how ludicrous, there is a minimum percentage of people who will believe the craziest possible conspiracy theory.
Clinton is responsible for not acting, but blaming him for September 11th is a projection into history. It’s almost as bad as building a boogey man of Saddam using his nuclear weapons he is going to build at some point in the future.
Well, I guess that means I am one of the loons then, because I think that FDR did his best to cause pearl harbor. Let’s recap:
The Japanese are at war with China. USA gears up production. USA freezes Japanese assets and forces an oil Embargo on Japan. Now, having an Oil Embargo would be a reason for the USA itself to go to war, if the USA were in Japan’s stead. Considering that Japan was already fighting a war and depended on the oil, this was even more so a strong incentive for Japan to attack the USA and to reclaim the Netherland East Indies’ oil.
USA relocates its fleet to Pearl Harbor. Why would someone do that, unless they intend to use that fleet?
When Pearl Harbor happens, the Japanese embassador is stalled and can’t deliver the declaration of war. Conveniently the only “modern” ships, namely the Air Craft Carriers, were out on a maneuver.
All other ships are not spread out over the harbor, but are neatly lined up, so that a bomber run does maximum damage.
Before, FDR had already declared that no American Soldier would fight in foreign wars anymore. He desperatly needed an attack to have any standing with the public.
One of these days I am going to dig out a couple cites to proove the above points. The points itself, if they are true, paint a plausible picture though: FDR had a reason to orchestrate it and given the actions of the USA a provocation doesn’t seem unlikely either. (so far it’s things I have heard from other people, which I deem reliable. However, with all issues, errors might happen)
ROFLMAO!! Absolutely the best laugh I’ve had all week. I especially enjoyed minty green’s post on his point by point. Good stuff that…post it back to this bozo and see what he says.
BTW, I have to agree with KGS…prolly impossible for you to win this one. When people get this kind of crap firmly imbedded in their minds (such as they are), they are generally imune to arguement.
A case in point:
From Optihut
I guess you are, Optihut…as I said, some people are just immune to arguement.
Thanks for the wonderfully stupid post, Badtz Maru…I loved it.
Damn it…the board posted my first try though I hit preview. Disreguard the one about the master, as it was NOT Cece that did the report on Pearl Harbor. Sigh
Optihut, your “Recap” contained not one shred of direct evidence, or even a reasonable logical argument, that FDR knew about the impending attack on Pearl Harbor, much less tried to cause it.
It’s absurd and is quite easily refuted, and in fact HAS been refuted on this board. If you want to start a new GD thread on it go right ahead; if you’re willing to genuinely consider the evidence, I’ll gladly participate.
As I said, the first link post was all screwed up…not only did I say Cece did it (which was wrong) but I put in the wrong link info. Doh!! I appologize. I THOUGHT I was deleting that post and posting the second, but for some reason BOTH posted. Oh well…the second one should work. Its not really relevant to the OP anyway, just something for Optihut (link that hopefully works now )
My appologies for all the trash I littered into this thread.
I agree with Scylla. However, there is a huge amount of responsibility to go around. From Bush, granted, down through the FBI, CIA, and a number of other federal agencies. Don’t forget local law enforcement, airline security, and even private citizens who may have witnessed criminal or highly suspicious activity and didn’t notify the authorities.
I think we always judge presidents by their reactions to attacks. It is also normal to go back and blame presidents for what happens on their watch, justifiably or not. Notably FDR and Pearl Harbor among many others.
No, George W. Bush was not responsible for causing 9/11 to happen. That list is even more -inducing than the list of people who Bill Clinton allegedly had killed.
About the only thing you might be able to accuse Bush of regarding 9/11 might be (1) downplaying the terrorism threat in the months before the 9/11 attack, and (2) being uncooperative with the current 9/11 investigations in Congress. Even so, neither of these is anywhere near what the OP is claiming.
There’s probably no reasoning with people who believe FDR knew about the pending attack on Pearl Harbor, but I have to try…
There’s little doubt that Franklin Roosevelt WANTED to enter the Second World War. But there’s also no doubt he wanted to WIN! Now,letting Hirohito attack a U.S. military base MIGHT have seemed like a good way to get the U.S. into the war… but allowing him to sink our Pacific fleet would NOT have made any sense at all! If Roosevelt wanted war with Japan, the ships we lost at Pearl Harbor would’ve come in pretty handy, don’t you think?
Pearl Harbor was a disaster from which the U.S. Navy might not have recovered. Even if you think FDR was an amoral cynic, it wouldn’t have made ANY sense for him to have allowed that.
One of the three carriers, the Enterprise, was due back at Pearl Harbor on December 5th, and only was still at sea due to a weather delay. Unless you believe FDR could control the weather like some James Bond-type supervillain, this claim is absurd. Cite.
I also note that both the Enterprise and the Lexington were not just puttering around in the Pacific; they were delivering aircraft to Wake and Midway Islands, respectively.
The whole “FDR knew” conspiracy theory is stupid. This site and Gordon Prange’s book The Verdict of History make mincemeat out of the whole damned thing.
