I’m thinking of his zombie films specifically, I love the original three but sometimes I get the feeling like Lucas they are good inspite of Romero.
Night- Well directed
Dawn- Probably his highest point
Day- Something went wrong, performances are all over the place. Some actors seem to think they are in a Z grade film and ham it up, others play it straight. There is some interesting moral ambiguity but the performances make it impossible to notice. In spite of all this its my favorite Dead movie.
Land-Competent B-movie, but could have been directed by anyone really.
Diary-Unwatchable
Further installments unseen by me.
I have not seen his other films, to me he has a really spotty record.
I actually think Diary is a better film than Land, but I agree he peaked with Dawn. Survival of the Dead was total garbage and the only Living Dead film I haven’t bought on DVD.
But Romero’s genius is primarily in coming up with excellent ideas. I agree that his execution of them isn’t generally as good as it could have been, but overall his films show a creative flair in subject matter and treatment that make them worth sitting through.
