Ah yes, now I’ve got a vision of Mr. Clinton’s gaze locking on the youthful eyes of the attractive saleslady, his voice like manacles sheathed in plush padded satin, and all she hears is “…seersucker…”
I started googling for pictures of women politicians who are not slim (it’s hard to think of very many) to see what they were wearing, and then I got mad at myself for doing so. Not because I don’t think Hillary could improve her wardrobe to look more professional, but because it’s such a trivial issue and I was embarrassed to be compiling a list of women based on their body type and clothing.
It could very well be the case that, assuming you became familiar with Hillary Clinton no earlier than during her husband’s 1992 Presidential Campaign, you have never seen her in public not wearing some type of body armor.
Hey! don’t go around dissing Mardi Gras!
Mardi Gras attire is always appropriate-even though it is optional.
I lost at the floral section. I would definitely take a fellow serious that looked like gramdma’s drapes.
I probably wasn’t paying attention, but was Thatcher’s wardrobe ever get scrutinized like Hillary Clinton’s is?
How about Trump’s hair / toupee?
Michael Foot got some severe sartorial criticism at times.
I think it’s actually his hair, and that’s the problem. He has, like, 11 hairs still on his head, and has grown them out 7 feet, and wraps them around, and piles them up, then shellacs them in place-- plus, they’re dyed some color.
And socks are O-U-T! good thing we don’t get septicemia from blisters anymore. (Or can treat it if we do.)
Where the heck would you be going wearing the summer suit with shorts look? Throw a kilt on, man! Cool breeze without looking like you are 8 years old.
In 2008 it was Letterman who had constant Clinton pantsuit jokes. It’s almost like he had a fetish about the subject.
Sweetie, any woman with any self-respect doesn’t wear outfits like that because they are horribly uncomfortable and restrict your ability to do important things, like walk and sit, plus it is very unprofessional to show bare legs like that. What exactly is wrong with wearing a shapeless tunic? She’s not trying to date you so why do you need to see what she’s shaped like under her clothes? She’s not applying for a job in the fashion industry so why does she have to have some “fashion sense”? I suspect it doesn’t matter; due to sexism anything she wears is going to be criticized. Perhaps we should require all politicians to show up naked for their debates?
I don’t care what Clinton decides to wear; I think that should be entirely up to her. But I disagree with your premise in response to the links sent. Most lawyers dress precisely like that for court. There are enough “old-school” judges out there who unfortunately think that even a pants-suit isn’t professional enough in the courtroom. I’m not saying I agree with that; I’m saying that’s the current standard.
My experience is that it’s entirely valid to call the linked outfits the woman’s equivalent of a man wearing a suit for this thread.
A women’s business suit is not exactly the equivalent of a man’s because it is neither as universal nor as versatile.
Gather a collection of upper-management men at work, and most likely 95% of them will be wearing suits. With women, it will be quite a bit different. Indeed, I think women in the highest positions tend to wear fewer matchy-matchy type suits than those in more middle-management type positions. In reality, it’s simply not the universal uniform it is for men.
A women’s suit is also less versatile. It looks like office clothing, and only office clothing. You aren’t going to wear it to a wedding. You aren’t going to wear it to a funeral. You aren’t going to get a portrait in it (unless it’s for your LinkedIn profile). You aren’t going to wear it on TV. Basically, if you wear it outside of the office, it screams “I’m just stopping by on the way home from work.”
I say this as a woman who loves wearing a suit. They are great pieces of professional wear, but they aren’t the same thing as a man’s.
I think that all women and men should just do the Annie Hall look.
