I was just curious. Recently, Ablett was banned, and I was wondering why. If its none of my damned business, I’ll understand.
And I realize that the guy was a jerk.
I’m curious too. I think TubaDiva should have a Banned Dopers thread that would be periodically updated like the Moved Threads I, II, III, etc. It would list those banned and the reasons why they were banned.
To satisfy curiosity and also as a warning to others – kind of like sticking heads on poles in the Middle Ages.
Eh. I don’t think it’s bad form, but I really dislike the idea of keeping an index of banned posters and the reasons for banning them. Many of the banned posters are trolls rather than simple jerks. Trolls get off by drawing attention to themselves. A thread dedicated to trolls would do nothing but encourage them. I can forsee some asshole, or perhaps more than one asshole, competing to get the most names on that list. An index sounds like an attractive nusiance to me, rather than a warning. Basically, if you don’t act like a shitheel, you won’t get banned. It’s really very simple. Mutual respect and all that.
As for Ablett, he’s was a returning shithead, namely Madhatter. Or you can call him, scoundrel, rogue, rake, knave, villain, robber, fraud, scamp, hypocrite, sneak, shyster, cad, trickster, charlatan, swindler, grafter, cardsharp, cheat, black sheep, ruffian, tough, rowdy, bully, scalawag, mountebank, liar, blackguard, wretch, quack, fellow, tramp, beggar, bum, idler, wastrel, prodigal, hooligan, ne’er-do-well, varlet, miscreant, reprobate, misdoer, felon, sinner, delinquent, rakehell, recreant, malfeasor, malefactor, profligate, loafer, rapscallion, renegade, beachcomber, mendicant, gamine, impostor, opportunist, vagrant, pretender, gambler, mischief-maker, sharper, faker, skunk, bastard, fink, rat, rotten or bad egg, con man, con artist, flimflammer, dirty dog, good-for-nothing, worm, two-timer, stool pigeon, case, double-dealer, phony, four-flusher, slicker. Any or all of those; you may choose.
Thanks, Unclebeer. By the way, that list was damned impressive.
Don’t be too impressed. It’s a C&P from my electronic thesaurus/dictionary.
Since whatever you’re doing hasn’t detered him in the least, and you ended up explaining it, why was Elvis showing “bad form” to ask, and scratch1300 to ask for a list? It would save having the half dozen threads out there now.
As to wanting to avoid creating a “Hall of Infame”, that’s easily accomplished by deleting the thread from time to time.
Also, since “Trolls get off by drawing attention to themselves”, why aren’t Ablett’s posts erased. I see here that can be done at one stroke.
John Corrado says “As for not immediately going back and deleting Grayson’s posts- well, it’s a combination of difficulty and unwillingness. Difficulty: it takes an Administrator to make such a delete. Unwillingness: we like to keep records of how people break the rules here; it makes it that much easier to provide evidence to their ISPs and get them in serious hot water.”
But, really, how much are you collecting? If everything from the first dozen incarnations weren’t enough, then maybe it’s time to stop collecting and start erasing?
Mr. B - who said that Elvis was showing “bad form” to ask?
Why don’t we erase the posts of every banned member? There could be several reasons.
[ol]
[li]As John Corrado mentioned, to have “evidence” in case we want to discuss the issue with other persons (e.g. the school from which the posts originate)[/li][li]If they have participated in a discussion and you remove half the posts, then the discussion might appear nonsensical to other readers of the thread[/li][li]Also as John Corrado mentioned, because it’s time-consuming[/li][li]Also the moderators/administrators don’t always act with perfect consistency, which is why you know that we’re real people and not robots.[/li][/ol]
Did you actually read my post? Ya know the part where I said, “I don’t think it’s bad form…”
But thanks for you input.
But someone said on this forum that it takes “one button” to erase a guy.
As to the need for a list, here’s another voice asking for details.
How about a closed “hall of shame” thread that only mods can post to?
It could be simple. Example:
Ablett: Returning shithead (Madhatter)
While we’re asking questions, who was the 2sense that was banned/deleted last week?
This is exactly why a scorecard would be nice.
A scorecard? We ain’t gonna do that, but you’re welcome to keep your own, just not on this message board. Fire up your copy of Excel and have a ball. If we see anything like that on this message board, it’ll be deleted.
End of story and end of comments in this thread; I’m closing it.
