Anyone?
You’re showing on the main page as being the newest member to this board so why should you care?
Essentially, he went out of his way to annoy the moderators.
In the thread in which he was banned I think Tuba explained herself quite well. Did you miss that post?
Coz I have been lurking and I have read some of his posts. Now I notice he has been banned. I searched the archives but couldn’t find why.
Thanks 'gene, I missed that one.
To be short and sweet, he acted like a jerk. Far too often. It’s very simple to NOT act like a jerk, but some people don’t seem to get that.
Welcome to the Boards, Mr. Pleasure. Hope to see your future contributions.
OK, I saw the link. There must have been worse posts from this guy. He did not seem that bad there. Annoying? Yes. Obnoxious or out-of-line? No. Give me a better example because I have seen worse.
Yeah I was thinking that too.
I didn’t look at all his posts, but in the thread that’s been linked to drum the drum says (bolding and italics mine):
“Your board is a lot nicer than those who run it.
That’s the reverse of most boards.
Someday this board will get new mods and everone will relax.
I’ll be posting under another name (or twelve) until then.”
Check out that last sentence. By the time he writes this, he’s already irked Coldfire and TubaDiva, and with this sentence he pretty much announces his trollish intentions. Then he follows through with this by posting to that thread under the highly original name DTD, using quotes from TubaDiva and himself in the sig, hinting that he will be back again. So why bother with wondering why he was banned originally? It’s obvious to me now that we’re better off without this troll who has seemed to make it his mission to annoy the mods.
TubaDiva also posts this quote, from the registration agreement:
So basically the admins can ban us because we misspell too many words, or because I call TubaDiva “Tubey” and she decides she doesn’t like me calling her that. Or maybe Lynn Bodoni spins a wheel and bans whoever it lands on. It’s their board, they do as they please and we agreed to this when we signed up.
So anyway Instant Pleasure and cooldude, no explanation is necessary, since no exact reason for banning is necessary. And cooldude, if you wanna see what else he did, click on the ‘search’ button under one of his posts to read all 30 of his posts.
What nonsense! All of you should be ashamed of yourselves. Sure drum the drum appeared to be a jerk. Big flying deal. Still how do you figure that gives the moderators the unbridled right to perform heavy-handed censorship on his arbitrary and meaningless posts? He wasn’t saying anything of importance anyway, especially something that would have irrevocably caused him/her to be banned.
dragonfly98,
I’m quite sure Drum the drum was a poster who had already been banned under another name (with good reason). Therefore, it was entirely appropriate for the powers that be to ban him again as soon as they realized this.
And since I am really posting this to suck up to the mods and admins, rather than because I actually agree with them - ::kiss kiss to all the mods and admins::
** dragonfly **, this was posted right above your post.
**Please remember that you are our guest here, and that we must reserve the right to exclude you at our whim, for any or no reason whatsoever. By registering and using the board you acknowledge this right and agree to abide by our rules and to submit to their interpretation and enforcement by our moderators and editors. **
Maybe if I put it below so you are surrounded by it you will read it and get a clue.
He certainly seemed to be posting a lot of good stuff, and politely, until TubaDiva laid into him. Presumably she knew him by his IP number, but why ban a guy who is being better than average? It just seems odd.
The other thing is this idea, posted by TubaDiva, Lynn on the same thread, and now Crunchy Frog that “It’s obvious to me now that we’re better off without this troll”
Crunchy Frog is clearly an idiot if he thinks the troll is gone. What possible basis can there be for that conclusion?
He comes back within seconds and tells them he has a dozen names. Why not take that at face value? It seems just so odd to me to keep saying the banning process has any effect whatever, except to increase the number of names.
You answered your own question: Because he’d already been banned under another name (with good reason) and those are the rules.
I guess you didn’t read the rest.
Read it again and tell me: Why declare a person banned when it has no effect on his ability to post?
It does have an effect if he/she/it keeps posting from the same IP, which is usually (but not always) the case. It took all of 1 post for DTD to get banned, and all of 13 post for Instant Pleasure to get banned.
Besides, it give the admins something to do.
Yes, I would have to be an idiot indeed, since I also pointed out in that post that he returned under a different name in that same thread. What I meant by that statement was that why should anyone gives a rat’s ass what happened to him since he’s obviously trolling and breaking the rules he agreed to when he join the first time and that we would be better off without him.
There, does that change in wording make everyone happy now? Sheesh.
And *Mu Mu
Because it seems he’s been banned once already. If you’re banned you can’t just come back when you feel like it, the admins allow you to come back if they feel you deserve the chance. He broke the rules, he got banned.
Mainly to piss him off…eventually, he’ll get bored.
We have several better avenues of attack, but they seem very underutilized.
The main one is stated by Alphagene in his “Housekeeping” thread. - He plans to delete the troll threads.
Yet, when I look down the list, there they languish, locked perhaps but still there.
If, asGuinastasia suggests, you want to bore the fellow away, what could be more effective than that? It clearly makes all the effort he put into the threads a waste of breath.
So, since we have declared this policy, why close threads ever? Just erase them.
I guess that’s my solution to the problem in a nutshell,
Don’t ban, it’s pointless.
Don’t close, it’s pointless.
Erase the offending threads. What could be easier?
Then relax.
Mu Mu, and others who are wondering, I can assure you that these matters are debated by the Straight Dope administration and moderators as well.
In short: deleting threads is an option.
However, banning will always happen when a person is either being a jerk, or someone who we’ve banned before.
