Is it common to write in braille?

If a person is blind and is adept at reading braille is it common for them to also write in braille? If, for example, they wanted to make a shopping list of groceries how would they record the information, in braille or with a dictaphone are the only valid options I can think of and I have never seen a blind person with a dictaphone, or reading braille in public for that matter.

If it is common practice to make notes in braille are there special types of paper and tools to do it or can any paper and pin be used?

You can find the tools here.

Are blind people able to write (in braille or otherwise) without “typing” with a special machine?

As a sighted person, I sure as hell can’t write anything legible without looking at the paper, so I’m curious. (Of course, I also find it amazing that people can read braille by touch).

In elementary school there was a kid who was blind and he carried around his little braille typewriter wherever he went (I don’t know the proper name for it sorry, it looked similar to the embossers in DMC’s link but I don’t see the keys on those fellers)

Sure. I mean, I’m not sure how frequently the average blind person uses one, but you can buy a stylus and a little stencil (looks basically like a ruler with holes in it) that guides the stylus so as to make each bump fit into the 2x3 grid.
