Trump’s promises were empty–almost comically fraudulent. But the fake promises of jobs were accompanied by real promises of a return to the days when inferiors knew their place—when the dark-skinned and the female and the followers of the wrong religions knew to bow their heads and doff their caps when the white man walked by.
Trump’s voters may have hoped he could really come through on the sketchy “jobs” promises. But they were pretty certain he would come through on the promises that he’d let everyone in America know who was a first-class citizen and who was not. And that was attractive enough to them that they were willing to avoid looking too closely at the jobs promises.
Of course Democrats can’t replicate Trump’s success with fake promises of jobs, because they’re not willing to accompany fake promises (even if they were willing to make fake promises), with the tasty sauce of white/male/Christian supremacy that Trump served up with his fake jobs promises.
Yes. Fortunately, Democrats don’t need to rely on fake promises; Democrats do have some specific employment-and-retraining proposals out already, and before the 2018 season starts, can put forth the effort to get them into the news. (Fox News viewers won’t be told about them, but if Dems can get enough people talking about the proposals, Fox News viewers may change the channel in order to get real information.)
Part of the message should be the fraudulent nature of pretty much everything Trump promised: no, we’re not going back to coal as our main fuel source, for example. But when a fake Trump promise is discussed, a genuine plan that would improve on Trump’s fake promise should be discussed, too.
Fine. So let’s say that Obama twirled his mustache, cackled with malevolent glee, and told the “wildly false” whopper that…you might need different insurance. And the right goes back to that statement again and again and again because they’ve got nothing else.
WHO THE FUCK CARES? So your insurance company changed to a better one. On the other side, we’ve got (seriously) Sharia Law as an actual threat to Americans, claiming that millions of illegals voted; that an e-mail server misconfiguration requires endless investigation and jail time, but that conspiring with foreign powers to change the outcome of an election doesnt. We’ve got the notion that non-criminal immigrants are dangerous, Jihaddist Muslims are waiting in line in countries that have never attacked us to come in (but chose not to while the Muslim Ban was suspended, because…well, it was never explained why) by the thousands, that Climage Change is a hoax created by the Chinese. We’ve got news sources that only show the photos or mention the race/religion of perpetrators that are minority or Muslim.
If you’re seriously claiming that these things are all of a kind, well, there’s no point in continuing to have conversations.
Seriously? Cite Fox News? In polite company? And when did “socialist” become a dirty word? Bernie ain’t in jail for peddling political porno, he’s a leper as much as she is.
Truth be told, I can’t listen to Maxie, but mostly its her voice that could be used to saw pine planks lengthwise. But her point about a culture of poor behavior on the part of the energy biz in America is valid. I would prefer an awakening, a commitment on their part to be good and worthy citizens, rather than a raiding party in expensive suits.
But failing that, yeah, regulate the shit out of them. Good for 'em, it builds character.
Oh, dear me, does that make me a Socialist? Goodness, Mr Hannity, whatever shall I do?
If the Democratic equivalent of Donald Trump was running against the Republican equivalent of Hillary Clinton, I have no doubt that I would. Fortunately, the Democrats have, for now, relegated the Democratic equivalent of Donald Trump to street corner ranting duties rather than have them run for president, so I don’t see this happening any time soon.
We are talking about that. We’re also talking about whether or not it’s pointless to even engage Trump supporters. We’re talking about multiple things.
I assume no one did either. It was a response to your question “What democrats vote for … “regulating businesses to death”?”
Maxine Waters, for one example.
I don’t know if elucidator is a Democrat, but if he is, he might be another one:
I think the point you were driving at is that Maxine Waters is not a good representative of the broader Democratic Party, and if that’s it, I can heartily agree.
To follow up on what I said earlier, Democrats need to talk with voters in Trumpland, even if they know they’ll win only 5-10% of them over max. For one thing, that might be all it takes to retake control of the House, but for another, the real problem with the Democrats, including and especially Hillary, is that they DIDN’T talk to voters in Trumpland. They wrote that area off as unwinnable. They write it off as flyover country.
A lot of pundits have weighed in on the special elections and bemoaned the fact that Democrats have lost every single one of them – and they’re missing the point. The point, if they can see it, is that even though the Dems lost those races, they were very competitive in districts that, by all accounts, should not have been even close. And that’s the take-away here. Democrats need to stop writing off white, rural America. They need to talk to white rural America. Doing that does NOT mean turning their backs on multicultural, cosmopolitan, sophisticated America. It just means finding space in the tent to invite others in for a conversation and not having elitists swirling their wine glasses and talking down to them like they’re a bunch of circus chimps.
John Ossoff may have lost Georgia but he did something that Hillary Clinton and the DNC has not felt very comfortable doing in recent years, which is going into the heart of WASP country and saying “Listen, we’re going to compete here. We have a message and we won’t agree on everything and maybe I’ll lose the election, but you’re going to remember this campaign and you won’t have an entirely jaundiced view of my party.”
Same here. And in local elections where the Democratic candidate was particularly unpalatable to me, I absolutely have. And, yes, it’s absolutely worth talking to a certain subset of Trump voters. The nutjobs who think liberalism is the cause of all that is wrong in the world are too far gone; don’t waste time on those. There are a number of middle-of-the-roaders who wanted to shake things up a bit, or who don’t consistently vote one party or the other who are open to discussion. They do exist. It only takes a small percentage of those to convert. Remember, the same country that elected Obama twice elected Trump, so there’s plenty of people who are not die-hard party line voters.
Our business corporations are filled with holy zeal for the Dollar Almighty. Sometimes, this fervent devotion leads them astray. Then they are not good and responsible citizens, they require a firm hand to guide them. This can come in the form of regulation, so that they are not permitted to profit by harming our people. Think of it as a form of patriotism.
We can look forward to the day when business is scrupulously run by persons of character, and such regulations may not be necessary. It would be foolish to presume so. As Obama has said “Trust in Allah, but tie up your camel.”
^This. It’s about weakmanning - pulling out the worst in a group, and holding them up as representative of the group. Of course the rest of the group is going to assume you mean them, because you’re holding the worst of them up as representative!
Because she is a Democrat that appears to support extreme business regulation.
Once again, the question was asked: “What democrats vote for … “regulating businesses to death”?” Maxine Waters is one answer.
I certainly don’t claim that she represents all Democrats, or even your average Democrat, but she is one Democrat that appears to meet the criteria of QuickSilver’s question, and she happens to be one that did me the favor of declaring as much on camera in a funny and memorable clip.
BTW, I don’t believe this is correct. Your post appears to suggest that the “Maxine Waters, Closeted Socialist (calls herself a liberal) …” bit came from Fox News, that they captioned the video with that decription. AFAIK, that is not correct. That description appears to have been supplied by whomever runs the JohnLockePolitics YouTube channel, and they don’t appear to have any formal position at / relationship with Fox News, except their reposting a clip from the network.
