Is it just me? (water weirdness)

I cannot drink water on an empty stomach. It makes me feel nauseous, like when you drink warm water. I can drink juice, coco, milk, no problem, but I cannot drink water when I’m really hungry. No one else in my family has this problem.

Am I just weird, or do other people have this, too?

I know what you are talking about…I don’t know if I would say it is a nauseous feeling, just a “I’m hungry and this water isn’t really doing the trick” sort of feeling. But yea, I can’t drink water on an empty stomach.

I can drink coffee, milk, coke, beer, all’s just fine on an empty stomach (okay, the beer will get me wasted in no time, but… ). Water is fine, usually, unless it’s too much. A cup of black tea makes me nauseous within a minute. I guess everyone has some individual quirks there.

What bothers me about water on an empty stomach is that I can feel and hear it sloshing around in there. It doesn’t happen so much with other liquids.

Me either! I can’t drink water first thing in the morning either, maybe because of the empty stomach thing. I also can’t drink any water that doesn’t come from the kitchen tap, and if the tap is dirty I won’t drink from it.

I guess I am even freakier than you :stuck_out_tongue:

I noticed this myself just a week or so ago! I still do it, because the nausea passes quickly and I hate feeling thirsty.

Soon I’ll be able to test whether it is just tap water, or whether filtered water has the same effect.

ETA: I’ve heard that water-makes-you-less-hungry thing before too. Actually the wording was something like ‘when you are dehydrated, it is common to mistake thirst for hunger’. Yeah, I always get those two mixed up

I have the same feeling when drinking water on a stomach that’s been empty for many hours…always thought it had to due with what was in the stomach (prior to any water), i.e. the stomach acids.

I can’t drink cold water on an empty stomach; it either gives me a stomach ache or makes me nauseous/uncomfortable.

Room-temperature water is a lot easier, but who wants to drink room temp water?

I always keep club soda in the fridge, however, which is much nicer to me. Perhaps it’s something about the sodium bicarbonate, but I can drink my fill of cold club soda without ill effects.

And as for being hungry…sometimes if I’m really hungry I can’t eat or drink anything at all, because I feel sick. And it’s not like I don’t eat regularly or well. (I’m not starving myself.) But if I wake up in the morning and I’m starving, half the time I don’t eat right away because I’m so hungry I’m not hungry at all. If that makes any sense.

I guess I’m just as weird–if not more weird–than the OP!

:smack:

Isn’t it funny? I dislike drinking warm water, but I can’t drink my tea or coffee piping hot. I have to wait for them to cool down to the temperature of … oh, I don’t know … warm water?

That’s weird to me. I drink a LOT of water, and often on an empty stomach. I sorta like the feeling of cool (not cold) water running down my throat, and cooling my stomach down. I like the feeling of it sloshing around in there.

Also, FWIW, I like all liquids at room temp or just a bit cooler / hotter. I don’t get people who drink ice water, or who microwave their already-hot coffee…

I got used to drinking lukewarm water while in Cairo, but I’ve since gone back to preferring it cold. It just tastes better to me, I don’t know why.
