Is it possible for me to get a PS3?

I know it’s probably overpriced but my wife wants one for Christmas so……
Is there any conceivable way I can get my dirty little hands on one?
I have 2 problems;

  1. I have 3 kids, 2 still in diapers, so sleeping outside Best Buy isn’t an option (plus it would kind of spoil the surprise, it would be difficult explaining why I wasn’t home for a few days).
  2. At $600 list price I can’t even imagine what the cost on e-bay is going to be so that’s out.

So is there any legit way I can get a PS3 (the $600 one) in time for Christmas without mortgaging my house?

Um…good luck?

Why the hell are these things $600 anyway? I hope I don’t have to work the day them come out…but I probably will. This will be my first and last holiday season in electronics retail if I can help it.

To latch on, what about the Wii? I’ve heard conflicting stories; either pay 450 now or get nothing or there will be millions in the stores and the scalpers will eat their Wii’s for Xmas dinner.

I haven’t heard anything about the PS3 but I have heard they will have plenty of the Wii to go around. More than they expect to sell by Christmas actually.
I think if they were able to sell through all of them Nintendo would be thrilled.

Xbox 360 was a different story. They knew they were undersupplied from the beginning.

Has anybody seen a workable demo of either unit in a store yet?

They usually have them sometime before the release date. I know target is already selling accesories for the Wii.

Up until '07, playable kiosks will be in Gamestops/Ebgames only. I think that Walmart and other retailers will have videos going. And, some people are reporting that they are there now. Check it out (but beware, bad grammar and non existant words await all thee that click on the link).

…reading my own link, I see that it’s just the console, no controller yet. Shouldn’t be too long though.

Pay someone to stand outside Best Buy for you?

Heh … I have a PS3 sitting right here on my desk.

Hate me.

Aw, come-on Boo! Share the love!

Done and done!
(not really  )

Eldest has said he wants a PS3 for Christmas.

Wife has vetoed this on price-tag alone.

Even if ‘Santa’ came up with cash outside of normal budgetary restraints, availability is a significant issue.

Crystal Ball Says: Looks like son will get the new Nintendo system instead (the one with the Weird controllers that no-one likes).

How old is the eldest? Depending on age and preferences, that may or may not be a good substitute from his point of view. The type of games on the two systems don’t exactly overlap. If he’s younger, he probably won’t care, but if he’s getting up into the age where he’s looking to play the Madden and the GTA and whatever else his friends are playing, it might. Don’t really mean to interfere, but I was that age… well, not recently, but recently enough

As for the OP… um… I would have said to try to get a pre-order in, but I’m pretty sure everyone is “sold out” on their pre-orders of what they expect to get, at this point. If you know anyone who works for, or generally has connections to, any store that’s going to have them to sell, asking for a favor might be a good option. Working people are sort of generally at a disadvantage to high school and college students when it comes to this sort of thing - I know one of my friends is planning to camp out outside a store for a Wii if he has to. Totally not worth it to me, but hey, he’s got the free time and the desire for the system, so, whatever.

I got to play the Wii quite a bit at E3. The controllers were great.

This is a long shot, depending on how important it is to you: get a part-time or even weekend-only job at Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, or somewhere else that’s going to be carrying it that’s also hiring seasonal help. Work just long enough to grab one for yourself before they even go out to the public (i have a friend that worked at Target and did this with the 360, unloading it on Ebay for a ton of money).

You have my condolences. Not a ding on your wife; I just think the PS3 is grossly overpriced for what it does.

Forget it, then – I suspect the vast majority of the folks who have snapped up the PS3 preorders are doing so to hawk them on eBay for even-more-exorbant rates. Couple that with Sony’s continued shortages (Europe ain’t getting any until next March, and Japan’s shipment got cut 20%)…

Cutting-edge graphics (which are useful only if you have an HDTV) and Sony’s push of their brand-new Blu-ray disc standard.

Nintendo just announced plans to ship 4 million Wiis to North America for the launch, and still expects to sell them out before Christmas. I think it’s a tad optimistic of them, but you never know…
