Mods: I know this might be classified as a IMHO question. I’m asking it here because this is where those questions are typically asked. Sorry if this ain’t Kosher.
We all know the types of questions that are true to the original “spirit” of the SD. I however am guilty of asking questions sometimes that would be considered just utilitarian. The reason I ask them here is simply because of the caliber of the answers and of the population of this board. Yes I can search the Microsoft Help Database (when I can find the damn thing) but alot of the questions here can be answered with one keyword in google. Also, some of the “How do I do this in Outlook Express” type questions are pretty dang hard to find in these databases. Sometimes I want the opinion on the best website for some purpose from people whose opinion I respect. I must admit when I ask these types of questions I feel a little guilty. What is the Emily Post on this?
I don’t feel taken advantage of by such questions. If I can help someone out, I take it as a blessing.
It does get tiresome when it’s been asked two or three times in the past few weeks, though. It’s always best to search first.
I think this is IMHO since there isn’t a factual answer to this question documented in the faq or the forum descriptions.
The general rule of thumb I follow is, if you can find the answer yourself, don’t ask here. Basically, if a quick search of google or by rtfm will answer your question, why are you asking us to enable your laziness? If you ask how to do X in Outlook and X is documented in the help files, I would not likely answer your question though there’s always a kinder soul out there willing to pick your nose for you.
I’ve answered some questions with a quick google search and I always mention that they could have found the answer themselves with google. I will sometimes include the search keywords I used.
And most importantly, make it clear in the subject line what you’re asking so people who might find it bothersome can tune it out. Other than that, I’m not offended at all. Fire away. Those sorts of questions are good for the self-esteem of nerds like me.
Gee, and I was looking for a new sig line.
If it gives ya warm fuzzies. I think I grossed myself out with the associated mental image.
IANAMod, but since you’re asking a question about this message board … I would think it’d go there.
To answer the question, I’m usually willing to pick your nose for you. (Thanks for the image, breaknrun. Some sort of attempt to answer your own question is a Good Thing, generally, but it’s quite true that some people are better at looking for answers than others.
So, KidCharlemagne, what’s your question about Outlook?
Hate to do this to you, but I would suggest you post this in “About This Message Board.” I don’t see a GQ type question in the OP.
