Is Justice Souter's lack of a polite tribute to Rehnquist a snub or not a big deal?

The Supreme Court released statements by seven Supreme Court justices who paid tribute to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who died Saturday. A statement from Justice David Souter is not expected, the court said.

Seems it would be polite to say something. Looks kind of petty by Souter. Was there real bad blood between them beyond the philosophical differences?

Maybe Rehnquist was a pompous jackass (I have no idea). Isn’t Souter the one that lives/lived with his mother? Perhaps he remembers her admonishment to say “something nice or nothing at all” and went with the latter option.

I’d love to hear if anyone has inside scoop on what the two justices’ relationship was actually like.

Souter has always shyed away from the limelight, declining to do interviews or talk with the press ever since he ascended to the Court. It wouldn’t be out of character for him not to make any public statements.

That and Rehnquist backed over his puppy back in '92.
