McCarthy knows that blaming one’s opponent for what is making people unhappy is always a sound strategy. Is it a hypocritical one? Of course. The only core Republican principles are hypocrisy and bigotry. The only real question, sadly, is how the OP can be surprised about this.

I think he’s right about his followers, but they aren’t the ones he needs to convince. It only helps if he can convince some people who weren’t going to support him or the Republicans.

Unfortunately, I do think that a large portion of the undecided voters are rather uninformed.

Ambivalently, an electorally significant portion of their base is dying off because of their position on COVID-19.
