Is match.com full of robots?

Funny!

I think the bots swarmed match.com in full force this past month.

Before July, the only women that would look at my profile were fairly close to home. Now, they’re from all over the country. Also starting in July, I’ve been getting e-mail from women from outside the area every other day or so. Most have not looked at my profile. The letters are all generic, and usually from women that have profiles that are equally so; attractive, mid-to-late 20s, looking for men in a broad age range. Some are African and Russian brides using a US location, and almoist all of them ask that you respond to a Yahoo address.

Here’s one from “karolina***”, a 27-year-old woman who claims to be from Monroe, Ohio.

Hi. Nice photo. My name is Anna. I am 28. Me very much to like your structure and I to decide to write to you. I wait your answer. I to want you to say that you to write to me your el adress. Simply so it will be easier to us with you to be linked. I with impatience shall wait your answer. Anna

Here’s “lovelysusan***”, 26 years old, supposedly from Oakwood Village, Ohio, using the same photo as another women who wrote to me that claimed to be from the Virgin Islands

Hello Handsome,
How r u doing? Am darlana from Florida but now in africa …
i saw ur profile and i was very glad bcos it was the best i had ever gone through so far , and if u dont mind i guess we should start up a conversation and lets see where its ends… get back to me here…darlana

Something’s been happening at Match this past month, and it isn’t good.

Oh yeah, I’ll show ya my “structure” alright baboochka.
Get those rather humorous eastern bloc messages occassionally.

I’ve tried several different sites and they all send out fake winks or interest letters to get you to upgrade your membership.

It wasn’t match.com, but I just discovered a profile of mine on a website I’ve never joined. I tried to send myself a message to see if it would actually get to me, but you have to pay to send messages to the girls on that site (the original was free). I’m assuming either the messages just get tossed or a bot responds. I wouldn’t have found it had they not kept the same username.

Well, I’ve had no luck with the 'bots, but a couple of toaster ovens and a refrigerator are really HOT for me!

Mmmm.

Hot hot robot sex!

Hot, OILY robot sex. The clanking sounds.

Mmmm.

Hmm, this made me curious so I just asked a friend who’s got a current profile there and she’s not gotten anything bot-like either. We’ve each had the polite ‘Thanks, but no thanks’ response to emails, but that’s a clickable option not random spamming.

Are we too ugly for bots? Is it primarily men that get spammed like this?

At least the bots are somewhat complimentary, my last cold email was definitely ‘real’ but rather insulting. I’m thirty-five and a 22 yo guy emailed me saying my profile was “not too shabby” and that while he understood the age difference made any type of real relationship impossible, he’s sick of girls and wants to “hang out with someone a little older, more mature, and more…hmm…grounded i guess u could say.” He touched again on the “taboo” of a relationship between Mrs.Robinsons such as myself and his youthful hotness, but suggested I might enjoy cooking him dinner and watching movies with him in my home. “i’m not especially looking for a physical relationship but if ur game, hey, y not?”

:dubious:

No capitalization, horrific sentence structure, veering into |337 speak and basically implying I’m not good enough to be seen in public with him but should consider myself lucky he’s willing to throw me a pity-fuck? Bring on the bots.

(back story)
My phone is listed in my wife’s maiden name. My wife and I are seperated and I haven’t got around to changing the phone.

Recently, telemarketers have been calling for my wife in her maiden name form claiming that she ‘indicated on-line’ an interest in various products. Like refinacing our home. (it’s an apartment) Or that she wanted to take classes at an on-line University. They all went to some sort of yahoo email that wasn’t my wife’s. (yes I checked)

But someone has been putting the info from the phone book into the net.

I think it’s mostly men that get spammed. Most women get far more responses than their peer men. Because men don’t get that many responses, they’ll probably be more likely to respond enthusiastically to a message from an admirer. The less Web-savvy might actually fall for a bot.

I just had a woman in Bethesda, Maryland wink at me. I live in Cleveland. It doesn’t look like a bot. The “looking for” age range is narrow, and the English is okay, but the ad is very generic, right down to the DaVinci Code as the last book read. This is a dead giveaway, though

About My Date
height: 5’ 0” (152.4 cms) to 8’ 0” (243.8 cms)

That, and the fact that she didn’t look at my profile before winking.

I much very like sound of her picture name. Me think she and I may have common something interest, too. Care I ask question you for her email code?

:dubious:

(FWIW, I’m not on Match.com, but I’ve gotten at least three bot-type messages on Myspace. They’re usually decent English and some even have profiles that look almost real, but it’s a dead giveaway when they say “I don’t really check here much, so if you want to hang out just email me at superhornysexxxxxy@18365923.net”)

Let me know when you find a Lucy Lu bot.

“Oh, Bippy the Beardless, I love how you NOTICE TWO THINGS.”

You mean messages such as:

Bring on the robots, I say; a few submissive Roman slave girl-bots are just the ticket.[sup]1[/sup] Just make certain that we don’t have a repeat of that nasty Westworld incident of a few years ago.

Seriously, this is about par for the course. Be thankful you are getting any kind of response at all. Last time I tried the online thing I sent out about thirty responses and got zero response; not even so much as a “Thanks, but I don’t accept invitations from a simian-featured, ill-mannered castrato such as yourself. Good luck to you next time!!!”[sup]2[/sup]

On the whole, I’m about 12:300 for responses, totalling up 2 stand-ups and two “coffee meets” with 0 actual dates.

They say it takes persistance, wit, and a resilience to rejection and abuse; but so does sawing off your own arms.

Wait for it…

Good luck to you next time.

[sup]1[/sup]I’m just kidding, ladies.
[sup]2[/sup]The “test post” doesn’t count, You Know Who.

Yeah, like elmwood said I think it’s just men who get spammed and botted (hey, did I just make up a word?)

I have been getting a lot more winks lately, but nothing that’s struck me as not coming from an actual guy. I just updated my profile, so maybe I’m showing up earlier in guys’ search results or something (like on page 2 instead of page 42).

I actually laughed out loud while I read what that guy said! Who thinks that’s a good come-on??

I got one this morning that said,

“very cute and she sounds intelligent…I like that
Check my profile. And then write me back.”

Usually I at least look at the guy’s profile before saying “no thanks,” but not this time. And he’s in Arkansas!

Holy crap, if I see that book listed in one more profile I’m gonna puke … it’s to the point where part of my essay says “I don’t expect you to read as much as I do, but I’ll be happy if you’ve read something other than The DaVinci Code.” So it’s all over the women’s profiles, too?

Hmm, I see that a lot – I always figured the guy was just too lazy to specify a height range. They always specify a weight range, though.

Cite?

I, for one, have never registered on Match.com.

On the other hand, I DO like to party that much, so maybe I should.

Why, it’s the perfect virtual environment in which to put your Turing Test programme through its paces!

Think: if male match.com members would patiently indulge the poor grammar and general bovinity of a cute shop clerk from Utah, could they really tell such a human being from a computer?

Likewise, most women always specify a height range. Those that don’t are usually bots or fake profiles - at least I think they are. The majority of women that write with “I don’t come here often but you can write to me at hotnwet@hornyxxxxx.com” leave height preferences out, and usually have a broad age range.

There’s a lot of long-distance lookie-loos now. Just a month ago, only those who lived fairly close to Cleveland would look at my profile. The last women that had a peek were from:

Carmel, US
Grenada, MS, US
Gary, IN, US
Austin, TX, US
South Park, CA, US
Buckfield, ME, US
Arlington, VA, US
Tallahassee, FL, US
Marysville, CA, US

Most of them have very generic profiles. I can’t say for sure that they’re all bots, but I have no other way to explain the sharp rise in out-of-town browsers.

Here’s a typical fake or bot profile.

BTW, despite the Gary address, it’s a white hottie girl.

Like I said before, though, a lot of e-mail is coming from women who haven’t even looked at my profile.

Oh hells yeah. From a post I made last year:

That and The Five people You Meet in Heaven seem to dominate the WSM crowd.

I gotta’ point out this reply, though.

Well, at least now we know who’s putting Dan Brown on the bestsellers lists.
