Is Maytag Blue Cheese well-regarded by gourmands?

I like it very much, but I’m the first to admit I don’t have a terribly sophisticated palate.

Yes.

It’s dependable. d&r

I would say yes. It’s definitely one of my favorite blues, up there with Stilton and Roquefort.

Yes, but probably not by gourmets.

At long as the Maytag repairman had no role in its production, I think you’re good.

It’s the loneliest cheese in town.

Is this what your cheddar turns into when the fridge stops working?

He could have - it’s the exact same Maytag family :).

Indeed. They’re quite diversified. Cheese, appliances, beer (Anchor Brewery), liquor (Anchor distillery - “Old Potrero” whiskey, “Junipero” gin).

Fritz Maytag also turned Anchor Steam beer around.

On Preview, beaten by bump, but I have links.

Neither do gourmands.

Gourmand: A gluttonous eater.

See post #5.

Too subtle for ya?

Fighting ignorance is easier if one spells it out. Might as well make explicit the difference between gourmet and gourmand, no?

BTW, any cites on gourmets not caring for Maytag cheese? I’ve read that it is considered 1st rate.

Its wayyyyy better than the Charmin cheese, let me tell you…Mr. Whipple dont know shit about makin chez.

It is a great blue cheese with an excellent reputation. Steve Jenkins, one of this country’s most well-known cheese experts, thinks very, very highly of it. It is also happily used by chefs all over the US.

Yep, it turns up on pretty good menus, and I’m a fan. Though Cashel Blue or Roaring 40s rank higher by a bit in my pantheon.

BTW, the Maytag family no longer has anything to do with the appliance brand AFAIK – Whirlpool now owns the company. I guess that’s what left Fritz with time on his hands to invent (well, not himself) a cheese. Maytag Blue cheese - Wikipedia

One of the Firestone scions likewise has a fairly well-regarded winery . . . .

Just an FYI, Fritz wasn’t the one who developed Maytag Blue.
